Default Timing chain Fiesta...Haynes manual be damned

Ok so one of my motors is a 1994 Fiesta I love these cars, so easy to work on... in conjunction with another one of my motors, a transit, being slowly relearning all those things I'd forgotten from being a kid working on cars with my dad...the Haynes says nothing about changing the timing chain...or I can't find it?

Anyway massive muffled rattle coming from engine...not tappets...Any advice on changing the timing chain...what to look out for... could it be ought else? any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If it's the same engine used in the 1990 version it has a belt driven cam on both 1.6 and 1.8, if it's a 1.6 the fuel injection pump is gear driven, whereas the 1.8 has another belt seperate to the cam belt to drive just the pump.
This is why you can't find the chain, as for a muffled rattle, I would be checking the basics first, has performance suffered, as they are not unknown to kill a valve or two.

Default Hi and thanks Tabetha

This may sound shameful...but it is only 1.1 registered Dec 1993 it is my incredibly cheap shop runner and identicle to my first ever car...the local shop being 15 miles away so do not use any of my other 3 petrol beasts for these or any other local trips.

It does have a chain...on finally giving up my pride phoned dad...he suggested that since it sounds like a wheel bearing noise is coming from the engine and it's not my diff...all wheels and gearbox checked and fine...that it is probably the automatic chain tensioner...since the chains rarely go (rarely been a word I am getting used to when it comes to problems with my motors)... but anyway will have to strip it and check it all I suppose.

Dad assured me that I do not have to take off the sump, the only info on web says you have to ...and I could not find anything in Haynes to say otherwise...which is the main purpose of turning to you guys to get some guidance in getting to the chain.

If anyone as any other words of wisdom and experience they can pass on for this job I would be soooo greatful...and again thanks Tabetha for replying to my thread!!!

It will be the Kent OHV engine and they do indeed have chains, whats the millage?, these are very reliable engines.

As far as replacing it goes I would imagine it would be a head off job and possibly taking the sump off as well to get to the cog on the crankshaft from which it is driven.
