Default New rs turbo cabby..

hey all...i jus managed to get a really good deal on a rs turbo(my first one)...
i was cruising it home on the motorway, it ran fine, didnt touch boost, then thought id give it a blip and it spooled up nicely then a sharp engine cut out...i thought the worst so drove it slow again...anyway...put some unleaded petrol in and off i went ...tried overtaking a car and it lost all power completly..had to sit in a layby fr 2hours while RAC where on the job.he tried everything and determined a fuel problem..then had a feel around the inlet manifold and discovered a air leak...would this, if not air tight completly mess up the air/fuel mix and cause it to not start? any advice would be excellent cheers..

Yes mate if there is an air leak then it will not idle or start depending how bad the air leak.
But you should go through the usual procedure........
Spark?
Fuel from injectors?
Compression?
Then go from there depending on your findings.

Welcome to the world of RS Turbo's mate!

any air leak on a turbo is not good mate at any rate and yes this could cause it not to start etc, how did he discover the air leak out of interest if it was not running?

This is based on when i had a rs turbo cabbys. Once i hadn't tightened a jubilee clip on the boost hose that joins the intercooler to the crossover pipe and it popped of which caused it to stall couldn't start, it popped on a right cu#t of a hill on a major road too, was my first taste of proper rs turbo ownership - fix one problem and another one pops up wanting some more money, and when it was running perfect with absolutely no probs and a joy to own someone stole it! back on topic though, i think the air leak could cause a problem and should be sorted, also maybe check your earth wiring too it that doesn't solve it. That cause mine to run fine one minute then cut out the next, i traced that to a earth wire by the radiator!

the problem with mfi is that the fuel is metered through the air going into the turbo, if the whole inlet system before the inlet valves isn't sealed, then it'll misread and not put enough fuel in.

find the air leak and sort it.

yeh well pretty much every junction i came to it would stall..
and when he was turning it over it was hissing from around that area...
every half hour or so it would fire then kill itself...
i had a feel around the inlet and i felt the gasket coming out between the seams, and other part of the inlet had no gasket coming out...so maybe that is my problem,
also matey i got it off said it had been set-up by oddkid creations.and it was met to be run on super unleaded...shorely it can run fine on unleaded?
i put a 10quid in of unleaded...so dont know if that caused the problem, it did make sort of a blowout noise just as it died.

cheers joealways wanted to use this...lol

timing moves ever so slightly when tuned on super, just knock it back a degree and you'll be close, but ideally turbos prefer super.

a leaking gasket could be to blame, sure.
i really should drive mine, been stood for 3 months now, but gets started up every week

inlet gaskets aren't a common prob but spose its the same as any gasket and could perish, check the breather pipe that goes from the rear left of the rocker to the bottom of the metering head mate, these sometimes slip off and look as if they r still on and can cause this type of problem
