Ipod Photo 60gb has the best DAC in it so the best potential for sound output to a hifi. Then once you have it send it to redwineaudio.com for modification to sound as good as a CD player, sell your CDs, get rid of your CD player and love the sound.

Depends what you want from an iPod. Do you want one that costs you a subscription every month? Then get an iPhone. But if you want one just for playing music, get a Classic.
I have an iPhone and an iPod. Why? Cos my iPhone only contains a couple of albums (for the rare times I'm on a train or something) and is used for phone calls, texts, internet, email - all the stuff you associate with a phone.
My iPod is a 60gb iPod Video, and is used purely to carry around the majority of my music collection so I have it all in one place wherever I go. The battery on the iPod lasts longer than that of the iPhone - using an iPhone as an iPod constantly, the battery will be dead in less than a day!
So weigh up what you want. Large capacity? Don't get a touch. Long battery life? Don't get a touch. Just for music? Don't get a touch. Want loads of other features such as apps, games, internet, email (wifi only) then get a touch. Not fussed about large capacity? Get a touch.

As for my iPod. 32gb is nothing. I rip all my music to fairly high quality (at least 320k MP3, but some of it is in lossless WAV format) and at home I have over 500gb of music. 8000 songs on a 32gb iTouch means each of your songs must be about 4mb, or slightly less, each, which isn't a lot for a song. Must be a pretty low bitrate, 128 or lower I'd say...
I downconvert music onto my iPod at 192k as there's no need to go any higher as an iPod and headphones do not convey fidelity higher than this, and even at 192k, I've filled my 60gb iPod with just under 9,000 songs. Ideally I need to change up to a 160gb Classic to get the rest of my music collection onto it.
I don't bother watching movies or TV shows on it - mainly cos I'm driving most of the time, but also, even the iPhone has a tiny screen it's just not worth it. Far better to download a few movie rips to a laptop if I'm going on a plane or train.

As for making CD's redundant, thats one of the reason's I got mine. I was a big Minidisc fanatic, as CD's in the car and out mobile are shit : minidisc gave all of the functionality with none of the drawbacks. But I tired of constantly copying CD's to MD's, erasing, copying again etc.
So getting into MP3, I could load all of my music (well, nearly) onto one little device, alf the size of a pack of cigarettes, and take it anywhere, any place and any time. At home I mostly use a Media Centre for music and movie playback, but for those times I just can't be arsed to boot a computer up, plugging the ipod into the dock next to my amp means I still have full control of my music collection without the hassle of choosing and changing CD's.
Ok, so some might like the tangible aspect to CD's, and some have expensive CD players and like to listen to it in "full" glory (bear in mind that even CD's are compressed, just like DVD's and BluRay films are compressed from the original tape real recordings), but for ease of use and day to day convenience, MP3's far outweigh CD's!

o k thrush would u say that there is a massive dif in sound quailty downloading at 192k to wot i,m downloading at then if so how many songs would my 32gig hold at 192k cheers
Keep going to get one and get with the times but keep not bothering. It wont replace the CD and vinyl purchasing though. I just cant imagine only have music as a file and not hard copies

As for how many your ipod will hold, I couldn't tell you. But my 60 is is filled at about 9k songs @ 192k (some are 128, can't be helped sometimes), so halve the capacity, halve the amount. So 30gb would be 4,500, add a few for the extra 2gb, maybe 5000-5500? Depends entirely on the lenght of the song to be honest. 100 songs at 30 seconds each won't take up anywhere near the room 1000 songs at 10mins each will...
