Default Help with 320d lack of power+smoke (boostleak?)

hi guys, need some BMW help

mate's got an E46 320D (its an 03 model, think its 150bhp one) and its developed a fault, when trying to accelerate you get a distinct lack of power accompanied by a distinctive whistling/whooshing noise and lots of smoke from the exhaust.

the only fault that shows on a diagnostics machine of for the glow control module (or somthing like that) which i'm assuming is unrelted as it starts fine.

my thoughts on this is that its got a split pipe/boost leak somewhere, but havent had a look anywhere yet.
any commn problems? i know a lot of BMWs suffer from split inlet pipes in some areas, is the 320d one of these? if so wheres the first place to look?

Sounds very much like the same fault i had on my diesel A4 , loss of power / black smoke i would defo look into a boost leak prob a split hose or one thats badly fitted / come off etc...

EGR interval has been brought down to 60k I think, brothers went but that burned a shitload of engine oil, not diesel smoke.

If its black smoke its probably a boost leak from a split hose or similar.

Turbo's common to fail on these too, but that would be blue smoke!

usually on the turbo diesel you get white smoke from vapourised diesel as the oil interfers with combustion!!

When I asked the smoke colour.

Black is too much fuel - so more likely a leak.

i don't know much about BMW's but does it have an air flow meter?
if so find the boost leak and that should sort it, sounds like it's just over fuelling and the airflow through the turbo isn't the same as what is going to the engine.

any common areas for pipes to split on these, it's all just one big engine cover to i didnt do much investigation other than popping the bonnet and going "hmm" then closing it again

also what does that glob control unit thing do that threw up a fault?
