As far as im aware its a common misconception that they need to work, like people who think a spare wheel has to be legal.

Yup, mot'd one of my old cars before I had a chance to wire up the front fogs, and they passed fine. May be a problem if they are smashed etc, could be seen as a hazard?

For MOT front fogs are not a testable item, neither are inner spots like on sapphy headlights, so long as the main light works on main the inners don't need to, and won't cause a fail.
The spare doesn't need to be "legal" for the MOT as this is not what the MOT is testing, BUT it does have to have suffecient tread etc just like the tyres on the car, taking it out is ok, so long as the mot is not started, as when it is NOTHING can be done to the car other than the test, so if tyres there it needs to be right but doesn't need to be there.
Beware if you have a sat nav on your screen it is a failure, due to obscured vision, and the tester is NOT allowed to remove it, same as any sticker/banner that is within swept area of screen.
A car can pass the MOT and still be illegal as these are seperate and different rules.

Why do so many wrongly believe this to be the case?
Annoys me this, people should keep quiet if they don't know what they're on about.

Spare doesn't need legal tread either, there's another good one.
Not a clue what tab's is on about on that one, could have nothing but wire on the rim as it's not part of the test.
