Default powdercoating and gaskets...

i wanna get my rocker covers/cam covers powder coated (as theyre currently just painted n it looks wank) BUT the rocker covers have integral non-removeable rubber gaskets on them.

im worried that the powdercoating process will kill em...

any thoughts on the matter?

I am interested in this answer too as i am having my inlet manifold and plenum done. will it be better to have both parts done separately then use a new gasket to rejoin?

powder coating requires the over to cure the powder turn it from powder(dust) to paint and the gaskets will not be of any use afterwards same as rubber or plastic cant 100% what temperture but its well over 100oc

jim, when i powder coat cam covers i mask the insides, where the gasket goes etc so the under side is not p/c.

i dont know about yours for the V6, does the gasket not come out??

usually the ovens are 180-240 deg C, how hot can the gaskets take?

i have done many zetec covers, and there are plastic clips that hold the plug leads in and they have been fine after heating.

as for shot blasting, that will fuck the gasket

HTH

gasket is NOT removeable...

if you fuk a gasket on one of these engines, you need a whole new rocker cover and they aint cheap!

been advised to speak to robS about getting em painted

the plenum i'd probably get powdercoated

Just one question, why do you all go for Powder Coating of Engine parts??

Mine are all wet-painted. As are my Brake Calipers. The finish is far nicer and they don't need to go through the high heat level of Powder Coating.

thats true, simply spraying it will be fine, powder coat is more durable tho as its harder and wont scratch as easily, and it wont chip.

i still dont paint the under sides of cam covers tho, just incase the paint were to flake for some reason.

I agree, Powder Coat is a durable finish, but I am yet to see a Powder Coated Cam Cover that looks ANYWHERE near as nice as a Painted one. I see Powder Coating as a Commercial process for stuff like Garden Furniture etc. Unless you are chucking spanners at your engine, I really don't see a need for it to be that tough. Mines been on for a couple of years now and if it is slightly tatty, its only because its been apart so many times.

Yeah but doesn't the paint crack and come off with the heat?

Thats why i've got mine powder coated as opposed to painting it.

powdercoating will be ok in usally, but with you gaskets that are fixed it may cause a problem when there baked, also with engine parts it better to have the parts acid dipped and not sandblasted, i made this mistake and ended up destroying my mates engine becasue the sand had seized the oil pump

well mine are currently pinted and the paint is flaking off and also where it was dirty i tried using GUNK to clean it and it took half the paint off too... the finish on it looks naff

i fogure if it gets powdercoated it'd look nicer and last longer

Most off the painted ones ive seen allways seem to get worse with age, as youd expect with heat build up, some do last, but ive seen alot more that look terrible

i couldn't give a shit what mine looks like. as long as it does the job. i figure it's more important to have stuff that works right, before it looks right.

imo jim, get the engine running properly before you piss about with cosmetic stuff.

I've had bits powder coated and don't see anything wrong with the finish when compared to painted parts - mine are gloss black, silver and red and look nice and shiny.

I have to admit that I did the petrol tank in flat black and I was a little disappointed - nothing wrong with the finish, its just not shiny!!!!
