1983 Capri 2.0l Auto Box problem

Default 1983 Capri 2.0l Auto Box problem

Hello everyone.

Can anyone with superior knowledge help me? I have recently bought a 2.0l Capri with an auto box. I have completed a fair amount of work on the car and it is really starting to look good. I do however have a couple of issues that I could really do with some help on.

The first I think is fairly straight forward. The car has overrun on the engine when I turn off the ignition. This has only started happening since I replaced all the serviceable electrics. I think the timing may be out? Can this cause the engine to run on? If so does anyone know the timing settings for this engine?

The second is more serious. The auto box is leaking auto fluid (red in colour) from the join between the engine and the bell housing of the box. I suspect that a seal may have given up the ghost but I'm not sure unless I take the box off. So my question is does anyone have a diagram of this box and is there any replaceable seals? Is it a job that I can do? Oh and where can I get parts for the box?

Running on after the ignition is turned off can be for several reasons, usually timing is out, but can also be from build up of carbon, or a weak fuel misture, but I'd look at timing first, the best thing to do these days is set it where it feels best by driving and adjusting, as could be much different from where it's supposed to be.
The leak from the box is from the front seal, this is where the torque convertor goes into the box, a big drum looking affair, easy job to do, but caution as no weight must be suspended on the convertor, apart from that it's a case of take box off, pull out straight the torque convertor, take seal out, can't remember if these have a housing with the seal in, but whichever it is easy to do, just be sure to put convertor back in nice and even, after oiling seal.
Don't know if you are into sporty ?, but you can get a shift kit and adjustable vac can for these boxes, which will improve no end, as will a smaller engined torque convertor as it will have a higher stall speed.

Once you get the old seal out any decent seal supplier, or gearbox place can get it, ford might even do it.
I would suggest a seal place is best as then you can get a VITON seal, this is a vastly better material than used as std(by all car makers) and so will cope better as autoboxes do get very hot.
Another thing that would help immensely is the fitment of a air to fluid cooler for the trans fluid, the cooler it is the longer it lasts.
