I have got a 306 XSi 2.0 16v which is the same as a gti6 just with 5 doors and different cams, i have the 6 speed box in mine too and i love it, goes really well for what it is, keeps with clio 172 cups etc
I recently drove my buddies 306gti-6 around the Nurburgring having only driven the car for the first time the day before!
What I would say is that for the money, just about nothing comes close - especially considering the rave reviews the likes of evo magazine and others give the car regarding it being one of the finest front wheel drive cars of all time.
The car is really, really malleable on the limit and gives you so much feedback through the steering that it really inspires confidence (lap one). As standard the power is well matched to the chassis to keep things interesting, but sometimes you want just that little bit more (torque especially, but it is not bad by any means - I was driving a tdi Fabia at the time as my own buggy).
It may have a six speed box, but I found that they have just squeezed those six gears into what a good five speed could easily have handled. I would have wanted 6th to really drop the revs for motorway cruising, but it's not like that. It still cruises at 80mph at about 3000rpm or so. It also has the typical peugeot gearbox - to get any joy you have to throw the gear into place hard or get good at blipping the throttle on the downshift. Real fun when you get it right, but this only really happens when you are "on it". As a daily driver I would want the 'box to be a bit slicker.
Build quality is not amazing (front bumper trims always come out) and you will have the odd rattle come from the dash but it is better than Renault on the whole.
Keep the car standard and you will love it how it is - not bad for a commute and great for a clear B-road with not much being able to keep up around the twisties.
Good car - I myself am seriously considering one at the moment.
