Done a few xr4i's hydraulic clutch, the difference is like Al says, night and day really, just a like a slightly heavy accelerator pedal in comparison when hydraulic.
BMW E30 slave cylinders can be used quite easy, with 0.75" master and remote reservoir.

It'd be worth seeing if your issue is because the clutch cable has melted inside. Undo the cable from the gearbox and see if it travels freely - if not, replace the cable.

Agreed Jon, often a new cable will make it feel a lot lighter ( obviously fdoesn't apply if you've recently had a new cable! ) and worth wrapping in Agriemach near heat sources

as already said paddle clutches are a bit 'all or nothing', the reason they are so much heavier is the clutch pressure plate is sprung harder, hydraulic clutch is the way forward mate and its a doddle to do..... although before splashing out check your clutch cable
