Does it make any unusual noises?

If it feels like its surging then it could be lambda sensor, mine used to do it til i changed the lambda!

it sounds like a diesel on tick over, has had the oxygen sensor replaced as the ecu showed it was at fault, also its very flat throughout the rev range

Mine has the exact same fault, no warning light and a judder when above 3k revs.

Replaced lambda, crankshaft sensor, plugs, leads & coil pack to no avail.

Last night i changed the fuel filter and it is much better but not quite right stil. Spoke with a number of Ford specialists and they have all said the fuel pump is what needs changing.

Looking into this so will update when fitted....

The ST170 does have noisey top end due to the solid lifters and uprated cams. It does not sound anywhere near that of a diesel though

Does the noise go when you depress the clutch

No, but probably just getting used to the noises the car makes as standard. Thought it would sound smoother, thats all. Thanks.

that sounds like the imrc, look on the end of the inlet manifold and you will see a cable , there is a black plastic thing there, they are prone to wear and breaking etc,
the imrc is the inlet manifold runner controller, the is a solenoid on the bulk head which controls it all. its what gives the nice surge of power at 4000 rpm
