Default how do you take an engine out??

after tinkerin with my car this afternoon, i have decided to take the engine out, due to find a rust hole! i have thought that i might aswell get it done now and have the engine bay all sprayed up!
im mechanically minded but have never taken the engine out of a car before so gunna give it a go!
was just after tips really on what to do and what not to do. what to do first and what to do last if you get me.
i could probably figure out but need the help of you guys to get the job done properly!!
any help would be immense!
cheers

ive just taken mine out, jacked it up and dropped it out the bottom and i seriously advise not to do it that way! thought id save some money and not hire a crane, i regretted that... best way is to take bonnet off and lift engine and gearbox out as one

even better way is to use a engine crane and bring engine and box up from the bottom..have to take bit more off, anti roll bar etc but it saves the risk of scratching the paint where its visible...

if you're doing it with limited equipment then a few strong mates, a good plank of wood and some rope soes the trick

tie the engine to the wood with the rope then get a mate/couple of mates either side of the car to lift it out

what car is this for, as this would help alot?

i'm taking it as your mate knows what hes doing he has a host/crane or access to 1, other wise don't do it, it's not safe & if you think it's hard taking it out that way, try putting it back in!

Dropped mine out the bottom onto an old skateboard and rolled it out.
Nice and simple, just make sure you get it balanced nicely on the board, don't want it tipping over

Taken mine out yesterday with my dad, basically stripped the top end, head off etc, then we lifted the block out with a long bar accross the front and sum rope!

i done a engine swap on a astra when the timing belt snaped, was the same as you mechanicly minded but little experiance, all i had was a haynes manual.

deff hire a crain there not expensive, but the main thing ........take your time
if you rush it u wud most likely break somthing and not nessaserily on the car!!

(sorry about the spelling)
