i done a engine swap on a astra when the timing belt snaped,was the same as you mechanicly minded but little experiance,all i had was a haynes manual.

deff hire a crain there not expensive,but the main thing ........take your time
if you rush it u wud most likely break somthing and not nessaserily on the car!!
