You shouldn't need the fan to kick in earlier. If everything is operating as it should there is no reason to want it to. Might be worth fluching the system through to shift all th emuck and makes sure the water pump is working properly. Christian on here used to sell thermostats that opened earlier the the standard item to help things along a bit.

You could always use a adjustable auto fan switch, then adjust to what you want for whatever reason.
These things can sometimes be got in std fan switch type fitting or fit in top hose.

the reason i wanted the fan to cut in earlier. was that the water level in the header tank rises to the top of the header tank. before the fan cuts in.
all the pipes are hot. the thermostate is working.
looks like i will have to change my thermostate. so that it opens at a lower temperature instead.
thanks regards ashley

You only need to be able to see some water in the ex tank when cold, would it help if you just filled the level lower ?, mine are always JUST above the minimum mark, though on my mondy it always settled itself just below the level even if you filled to max mark, never used a drop though.

ashley, first thing's first fix the leak in your cooling system

my first port of call would be to replace your header tank cap (you are using a genuine ford one right?)

you do not need your fans to kick in earlier, you need to fix the fault in your cooling system

the fiesta turbo rad is useless i have seen bigger heater radiators lol
get a better rad, renew the cap and make sure the coolant system has the correct quantity of antifreeze in it and is bled properly for starters
