Default Police Speed Camera Vans

Are they actually proper Old Bill operating them or is it just some Cop Idol playing Policeman?

What I mean is, what would be the legal implication of say... someone driving by one of these forward facing vans with no front number plate and maybe... flipping them the bird?

Fuck knows - almost as annoying as me driving up to the one I know at 10mph under the limit and then nailing it off up the dual once past him

A question ive been wondering about, would the camera vans be any use whatsoever at night?

Im guessing they'd have to use infared to be effective?

At the moment im only on the road in the dark

Tax disc checks? Does that mean I should display mine? I don't as they tend to get nicked easily round here.

Just do what a friend of mine did a few years back:

He had a company Transit van and was driving along in it one evening (as you do when it's not your petrol ) Noticed one of those speed trap vans in a layby on an A road outside some houses (which the residents used to park in)

So he pulls in, reverses right up to the camera. Parks up. Pulls some sandwiches out and has a little rest stop. Blokey operating the van was fuming but there was nothing he could do, I think he even pulled out after he'd packed it all away right behind him. Co-incidence or what! LOL

They will be checking the plate against the database to see if it has tax, not looking at the actual disc.

Some are operated by the (*cough*) Safety (*cough*) Camera Partnerships whilst others are actually operated by the Police themselves.

When I took my mums car to a PF meet I picked up MadMac with Switch and b19bal and on the way back up the M10 Mac and I flipped the camera van the bird. Never heard anything about it and my Mum never came and said anything so I'm assuming she didn't get anything from it.

In Lancashire they have the "Speed enforcement Team" which drive police vans but have orange lights on instead of blue. They were advertising for it in the paper about 6 months ago. They have no power of arrest as far as I am aware, so they can't pull you over, which is fantastic if you have a jammer, because the only dodgy thing about them was if the police pulled you over and inspected your car.

Oh, and they work shift patterns too, including bloody 11pm at night at the bottom of hills

It varies in Lancashire. The scamera partnership would have us believe they are all coppers (I wrote and asked them a couple of months ago and that is what they said), but frankly I don't believe them, and as Dave E says, they have special vans now. But its an interesting point. The law on speeding allows the evidence from speed measurement devices to be used in court to support the opinion of a "police constable" that a particular vehicle was speeding. So what are the implications if it wasn't a police constable that saw a vehcile speeding, but a civilian employed by the scamera partnership? The primary evidence, the opinion that the vehicle was speeding, is arguably not admissible in court. That leaves the secondary evidence which cannot stand alone. Anyone caught speeding by a camera operated by a civilian should take urgent legal advice and perhaps visit http://pepipoo.com/NewForums2/index.php for an opinion. Scamera partnerships are on really dodgy ground with this!

Incidentally, when the Freedom of Information Act comes in in January, I will ask the Scammers the same question again and this time they won't be able to lie to me....
