Default Forum software experts - Advice please

Despite rumours to the contrary, I am not a forum software expert. lol

Can anyone recomend a good robust and easy to set up forum software package and/or advice ?
Has to be free as I am on a budget of zero...LOL

I have webspace with a dedicated server running apache, sql 4 and php 5.

I have looked at PHPBB but how far has that come since those data base error days ??? ...LOL

Only legitimate free software please...
Thanks

Newer versions of phpbb are much more stable with large user volumes, even the older ones like PF used to be are absolutely fine for anything except mega high traffic sites.

Chip,
I did consider the latest PHPBB and infact am as we speak trying it as an experiment.
Was just worried if our resident hacker ever got in..LOL

Not looking for high volume handling as it will only have 2 open rooms and the rest will be topics created by administrators only.

Just seemed an very easy way of presenting information and integrating user chat.

Rich,

I appreciate you thinking I am that clever but you are mistaken.

Just because "some" people say I hacked the old PF website doesnt mean its true.

There was never any proof it was me and how could I prove it wasnt ?
I was just a convenient name for thsoe with a grudge to use.. end of story.

You c*nt

You dont need to be mega clever to be a good hacker, you just need to be reasonably clever and be a sad cunt with nothing better to do as it takes time.

I have the skills but lack the free time!

Yes my standard rate when doing IT work on a contract basis is 60 pounds per hour.

Could easily take hundreds of hours, or I might fail to manage it depending on what the actual job is, but as its on a payment for time basis, that wouldnt effect the invoiced amount.

Impossible to estimate in advance the number of hours required for tasks like this.

Yes of course, you would be paying on a per time basis.

With a task like hacking, its impossible to know up front if you will succeed or not, there has to be some form of vulnerability for you to exploit and you dont know if that is the case or not until after you have either found it, or spent an infinite amount of time trying to find it.

PS

There would be an increase in cost if the system being hacked didnt belong to you, as I would have to undertake the work from a country which doesnt have hacking laws, as otherwise it would be illegal if the system didnt belong to you, I dont know the costs involved in that, as Ive only ever done hacking on systems that were owned by the person paying me to security test that system in the first place.

Its only illegal to be hacking if it is a system that the person paying you to hack doesnt own, so with no specifics, this thread isnt illegal.

Its like if I asked a question how best to make 100s of copies of a music CD, it could be priacy or not depending on if I owned the copyright, so without any details of it I was the artist or not, it wouldnt be beyond the rules of the forum to discuss it.

No mate

Its because I posted a wanted advert for peoples broken/unused "items" and the moderators mistakenly believed I was trading for profit even though I never mentioned any company name past or present and have never ever sold or bought the said items myself before for any reason.
I stated it was for R+D purposes and never offered any kind of monetary reward. This is for my free software project.

Yet around the same time a moderator (not a trader) who is also in the tuning/motor trade posted his car for sale including the name of his company.
No infractions.

OK, I have decided to use PHPBB.
Seems pretty secure now and as I will only have low volume traffic it should be stable enough for my purposes. (Le critical erreurs..LOL)
Easy to maintain and install and the base code is easy to modify if needed.

Thanks for help everyone

I'd be gutted if you couldn't hack it; waste of money. Well, in my case.

Some things in life are expensive, some things arent available at all essentially, life's hard.

People like the CIA no doubt spend billions on hackers, much of which will be money spent for no gain.
