Default E39 M5 Owners

I was discussing these with a friend at work regarding running costs,
so from actual owners or people who have run one in the past what is the real life fuel consumption on these vehicles.

pottering about round town????

cruising at 80ish on the m/way????

giving it a proper cuffing ?????

ve extensively serviced the vehicle and ensured the MAFs are sending the correct volumes to the ECU, reset all adaptions, fixed all faults and done some logs.

Engine cold run to work. Never gets hot as drive only 1 mile.
= 12mpg

Hot engine, round town. Not hammered, nice gentle driving using the immense torque.
= 18mpg

As above but utilising A roads too.
= 21mpg

Cruising on flat motorway in 6th with cruise control engaged.
= 27 (saw 30 for a while with Dan, but not representative IMO)

Giving her some beans down the country lanes. Hard on it, never below 5000rpm.
= 8mpg.

Seems to answer the question quite well, although i am a little surprised at the cruising figure i wouldnt of expected it to be that good.

Figures above seem pretty accurate and if an pre 2001 car i believe around a litre of oil @ £15 a litre to every 800/1000 mile to. Can soon add up if doing big mileage

The only way I would get anywhere near that motorway mpg with my old one, you would need a sturdy tow rope, and a willing towing vehicle.

I did a lot of miles in mine, and it was simply not capable of exceeding 25mpg at any time (except when free wheeling down a hill)

Also, as stated by 3drstretch, dont forget the way the engine can use oil - particularly the early ones.

Mine would use 1 litre of oil for every 600miles covered, and when taken to bmw, they stated that this was within tolerance.

Well, mine never uses oil but it is a later revised one and James, lets be realistic, yours has, well, YOU in it ya big lumbering ape, of course it wont do over 20mpg.

Update after many months of ownership:
Ive done mine tank to tank as well now and have actually had 28.5mpg once although she seems to truly hover nearer 25/26mpg at 80mph in 6th due to the fact you will, at least once, boot it fr some reason. Even if its only to make yourself smile.

The cold I have seen an improvement on actually, gay as it sounds Ive tried going to work the slightly longer way instead of down all the side streets and on the main 40mph roads to work she now averages 16.5 for the cold mile to work instead of 11. far more palatable.

Any pet hates?
None. Without doubt, the best car Ive had the pleasure of owning or spending any length of time in at all. Incredible build quality, incredible reliability, Serious fun, seriously powerful and seriously nice place to spend a few hours.

Big thank to JJ for his part in making me buy one.

on my run from Redditch to Gloucs down the M5 for work mine sees 28mpg quite often with Cruise on...the trouble is i HATE slowing down when someone is labouring in front of me and i tend not to brake if possible just because i don't want my figures dropping

the above figures are pretty representative too IMO....it's actually more economical than my old EVO and on a recent trip to London in my Girlfriends new Volvo C30 2.0sport we only averaged 36mpg cruising at 70-80mph....so IMO getting 28mpg from a big heavy 5.0l BMW is pretty awesome!!

Stu - you may have a point there!

Mind you - next time you get to the ring, dont forget to reset it before a lap - that will make your cold mile seem somewhat efficient I reckon!

To be fair, I have noticed that those with the facelifted cars appear to have not only better oil usage characteristics, but fuel usage as well. This may be more than coincidence.

One of the best cars I ever owned.

Didn't they modify the rings on later ones?

Yes they did, complete with the piston modifications. The reduction in oil usage is pretty well established. My comment was more towards the fuel economy.

I wonder if they modified the map at the same time to improve the economy.
