i had this with my xr2, changed starter, battery, earths and power lead to the starter, and wrapped the starter to protect it from the heat, nothing fixed it, so a zetec went in and its doing it again.

im trying a battery with a higher cranking amps rating, but i cant think of anything that i havnt tried

if you sort it let me know!

Heat from the turbo and manifold kills starter motors on Rs's, there is suposed to be a heatshield to protect it but most lost them long ago!
Heat wrapping your manifold can help or sourcing another heat shield.

Had the same problem on my XR2 when we moved the battery to the other side. We forgot the mass connector to the starter motor. The cold engine works fine as a mass connector, but when it gets hot, its electrical resistance rises. With a warm engine the starter refused to do his work, but when the car was pushed, the engine started without any problems. Made a NEW mass connector and everything was fine again. Although it sure is a good idea to take care of the heat problems a turbo makes...
