Default E60 BMW 5 Series - New shape, Anyone any gen?

Looking at getting a new motor for crusing about in and having the L200 for the toy, which to be fair, is a sensible idea

Been looking at the new E60 BMW's and quite fancy a 525D M-Sport, with 185bhp and 300 lb/ft torque it is more than enough for what I need - comfort and speed and pinprick sharp looks - Its either that or go un-sensible and get an E39 M5 for the same money

But are there any buyer guides or has anyone on here got an E60 of any description - what to look for when buying and what known problems?

future used to have a 2.0l straight six E60, was fooking gutless but could be wound up to about 140 lol. also the diff was shit, couldnt drift it at all, i remember just sitting in a cloud of smoke after spinning it at brunters lol.

all round nice cars, but i felt that the steering just didnt give any feel, and the seats were a pain in the ass to get comfy, too much adjustment on them imo.

dunno what the derv version is like, but deffo dont get the 2.0l petrol!

My old man has a 520i SE E60. Had it for coming up to 3 years, bought it from Stephen James on a 53 plate with 31000 miles on it.

So far it has thrown 2 coils (apparently common). One of the Traction Control modules packed in so traction was constantly off and when he first bought it whilst AT the dealer the wipers and indicators and mirrors wouldn't work I think or something like that another module that controls them or whatever so that was changed instantly. This was all under warranty though.

As for the car, very very comfy smooth 2.2 straight 6 170bhp. Isn't underpowered in my opinion but if you are going to go for a petrol I'd get a 525i or 530i. My dad only bought a 520 because he is 60 years old, doesn't give two shits how fast it gets there as long as it cruises comfortably and is very spacious, decent amount of toys as standard. It's also a manual not an auto. When I've driven it occasionally it needs to be over 3000 or so rpm to properly get going. I think a derv is more suited to the 5 series but since I don't like dervs if I were to buy a petrol 5 series it would probably be 525i or 530i. I reckon a 525d or 530d again would be plenty. Depends on what you feel really.

To summarize, pretty reliable, very comfy, plenty of space, looks great, nice toys, won't bend the laws of physics but isn't a total dog.

Sounds like a plan - But, having enjoyed 11 months of trouble free motoring in the E39 530d M-Sport, will I be sorely dissapointed with the E60?

We do drive it hard, have to to get it moving. Also, one of our lads reported that when driven 'very' hard the 530d just cut out!. When asked BMW reckon it's a safety feature!!!!!!!!!! It kicks in when the cars brain thinks it's crashed. I have no knowledge of cars brains, but I can assure you our 530d averages 16mpg (have seen instant mpg a lot lower than that). And another thing, when you press the accelerator there is a momentary pause before the thing goes, just enough of a pause to make sure you are by now mid corner before the power comes in. Like I said, pile of shite!!!!!

My dad either had the choice of an E39 or E60. Went for the E60 and didn't regret it. Looks a lot more modern imo and feels a lot bigger inside with more space and just overall a much nicer more modern car. If you want the best of both worlds get a E60 M5...

Like I said if you are looking for a diesel E60 525d or 530d would be very nice imo and similarly with petrol 525i or 530i. Also depends whether you want an M-Sport or SE.

As for a 16mpg 530d that is a pile of cack....there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with that car. No way is it performing like it should be.

16mpg......BULLSHITE : I've driven a nearly new E60 530d Sport quite recently, and 16 mpg is absolute crap, even if pushed hard (which I did) I still managed an average of 33mpg. Agree about the hesitating acceleration, but that's due to the turbo, and you very quickly get used to it. I drove from portsmouth to the north of england during the night, cruised at around 85 - 90 mph on the motorways, and accelerated hard whenever I had the opportunity, and still averaged 33mpg. Reasonable performance..... Total Luxury..... Good reliablity, and good resale values keep them high on the list for an everyday car with abit of class.

I think you have a problem with your 530d if your only getting 16mpg...........or one of the lads is syphoning off diesel everytime he uses it..............LOL

AUTOCAR TEST RESULTS E60 530d Sport

Fuel Consumption (Urban) 27.4 mpg
Fuel Consumption (ExtraUrban) 47.9 mpg
Fuel Consumption (Combined) 37.7 mpg
0-62mph 6.8 seconds
Top Speed 154 mph
Cylinders 6
Number of Valves 24 V
Engine Power 231 bhp
Engine Torque 369 lbs/ft

I gave next to nothing as it was a standard SE model....I've added all the sport bumpers and stuff and a few other bits..

If you werent so far away you'd be welcome to take it for a weekend to see if you could live with one..

s type r's were all 4.2 i think chipper. the 4.0's tend to eat head gaskets and timing chain tensioners every 40 k or so.

took these to remind me how it all go's back together.

done 4 more since, all funeral cars with n/a 4.0's in them . not what you would expect from a jag.

Owned a 530d Sport with the autobox for just over a year.
great car.
Average 32-34mpg
Mine has lots of toys, leather, sat nav, xenons etc, quite a few around so look at a few and try to get one with some of the toys fitted.
Not had any real hassles with it.
Did get the software updated though as the i-drive decided to throw a wobbly a couple of times but since the update it's been spot on.

What is i-drive???

What would be the best box to go for? Auto or manual? I think most reliable is key as I could live with either.

i-drive is the annoying central control that controls most things on the car. Alot of people find it frustrating and confusing and distracting.

Great cars though.
