It kicks in when the cars brain thinks it's crashed. I have no knowledge of cars brains, but I can assure you our 530d averages 16mpg (have seen instant mpg a lot lower than that). And another thing, when you press the accelerator there is a momentary pause before the thing goes, just enough of a pause to make sure you are by now mid corner before the power comes in. Like I said, pile of shite!!!!!
