COSWORTH back in F1 from 2010!!!!???
FIA are now in exclusive talks with Cosworth in the supply of a alternative, cheaper, powerplant for F1 teams.

Apparently this will NOT be a mandatory engine for all teams. McLaren can still use Mercedes engines, Renault can use their own etc. The Cosworth will be a "standard" engine for those without manufacturer backing. Which in the wake of Honda's pullout of F1 seems to be a good idea.
I personally would LOVE to see Cosworth back in F1

2006 was the last year with Cosworth in F1. The Williams team had Cosworth power before they switched to Toyota in 2007.
The irony about that was that the Cosworth engine was widely regarded as the best and most powerfull F1 engine of the 2006 season. It was also the first to rev to 20000RPM (both on the dyno and in real race conditions). But financial backing was vital to Williams and when the Toyota engine came at a lower price they had to switch fro financial reasons (Williams could have other reasons as well obviously).
I visited at Cosworths facilities when they developed the V8 F1 engine that Williams used in 2006. I saw it on the dyno and even then they were talking about very high revs and were very confident about the performance of the engine.

i was at cosworth back in 2006 and seen the production of the F1 engine.
the camshafts were ace, made of titanium and hollow lol, weighed about the same as a bag of crisps!
i loved looking around there, awesome place

According to the proposal from FIA the teams have three options:
1: Use the Cosworth powerplant
2: Build a new engine similar to the Cosworth spec version (actually it would even be based on the Cosworth blueprints)
3: Use their existing engine but with no development etc.
This would probably mean that the Cosworth engine will be just as powerfull as any of the other options. Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault would maybe prefer to go for option 2 (or possibly 3 depending on the competetiveness of that option) so that they could still claim to have their own engine (external appearance could also be different, which could visually differentiate the different engine manufacturers).
Another good argument would off course be cost for the Cosworth engine. I would guess that Ferrari, Mercedes, Renault Toyota and BMW would still build their own engine but apart from those, the rest would choose Cosworth.

Remember that the engines in F1 today are 2006 engines with frozen development and rev limiter. I seem to recall that Cosworth at the end of 2006, just as all the other engine builders, made a final version of the 2006 engine to be homologated for the 2007 season. That included the rev limit and technical spec. None of the other engines have been developed since the end of the 2006 season(supposedly...). In reality Cosworth probably could supply a very competitive F1 engine to a team even as early as next season by digging out the homologated F1 engine for the 2007 season. The Honda team is in need of a engine for next season and they are also positive to the standard engine proposal from FIA....
In reality Cosworth will maybe just have to modify their existing design slightly for the "standard F1 engine" design for the 2010 season.

All of the sport magazines (including the German ones that I read) regarded the Cosworth as the best engine.
Only problem for Cosworth was that they did not have any car manufacturer behind them. That would have meant that the manufacturer would have paid the bill for the engine and the team could have it at a reduced price. That's why Williams choose Toyota as the price was considerably lower than for the Cosworth engine.
So purely a financial decision.
Its very good news.
Living in Northampton and with the garage only 40 yards from Cosworth. (very handy for bits) I have alot of friends & family members that lost their jobs.
Mamby some might get a cal back.
I know one has.

Williams retired several times in 2006 but never (or very seldom) from engine problems. Mark Webber was very sad that they would not keep the Cosworth engine as he believed it to be the best engine on the grid.

sorry my bad i think that was about the only bit i didnt read.hope they do tho one of my mates who loves fiats always says i cant see any ford.but obvusly ferrari is a fiat group car so he wins lol.:-(
so they chose a cheaper engine over a better engine? thats very short sighted off them . surely if the cosworth engine was so good and everyone could see that it was the best then they and others would have used it regardless off it being more expensive as F1 isnt about the also rans.winning is all that counts.
Here are two very interesting articles on the Cosworth F1 engine:
