Default any HR people on here - Q re depression/stress

Morning all...

Does anyone know if an employee has a legal obligation to inform their employer if they have been diagnosed with depression and/or stress by their doctor/psychologist?

The person in question says she feels reluctant to mention it as in her workplace there can be a bit of a stigma attached to it. Apparently the professionals involved have made no recommendation regarding taking time off so far and have suggested lifestyle chanegs may help the situation. (Things like excercising, catching up with old firends etc). She's not been prescribed any medication either, although she is attending weekly individual counselling sessions.

You are under no particular obligation to inform your employer. However if you drive or operate machinery at work and are given medication that might affect this, you would then be under an obligation to advise them of this.
Been looking on the internet and the above is the best answer, and true.

No your not under any obligation to inform your employer, it's personal and providing it's not affecting her performance at work then there is no need for them to know. As she says there is alot of stigma attached to mental illness which is a shame although it should NEVER happen in the work place and if it does she should see HR.

As said no LEGAL obligation, unless medication affects her abilities.
As you have found there is a serious stigma attached to mental ilness, wait until you have been detained under the mental health act, it's gets much better!!

depression is classed as a disability, and you dont have to tell your employer, but it is advisable to do so,as they have to make allowances for you.ie,time off cannot be used against you in redundancy situations.ect ect
