I hadn't really noticed it, untill the missus pointed out that i have a 20 minute one way conversation with the dog each morning
is this normal, does anyone else do this?

Obviously it's normal to talk to the dog but to attempt to converse with a dog suggests you may need some support from close family.

Good luck and remember, people are only ever a phone call away.

a bit like me then, when i get up in the morning the dog is the only one awake, so you have to ask him, if he is ok, if he had slept well, what would he like for breakfast, where my shoes are etc
Of course I do, it's just good for the dog, talking to dog makes him or her happy, even if he or she does not have a clue about what you're saying.
Sometimes it feels like our dog has learned all her social skills from us humans, and so she is socially inept with other dogs.
Many times when she has something to say us (like I wanna go out now) or something, she doesn't bark like normal dogs do, it actually sounds like she's trying to imitate human talk, quite entertaining to hear that.
Usually when I talk to her I just talk a load of bullshit, but she likes to listen. But she clearly understands when I'm saying her that I'm gonna let her go out or something.

One of my friends refuses to talk to his dog in case it confuses it and it forgets the commands he's taught it...
...on the flip side...
...I ask my dog loads of questions and chat away to it. The most obscure thing I've ever asked Bailey is if he used to be a pirate because his ears picked up at the word 'pirate' once.
He responds well to:
Carrot
Lettuce
DentaStix
Pee'n'Poo
....are you wanting to go to the beach?
....are you wanting your tea?

Cheers,
Grant

I think people that know me would expect me to say yes – but I don’t talk to or negotiate with my dog
the only English he knows is ‘sit, down, stand, heel, finish, stay, wait, out, off, leave, good boy and fetch’
If I talk to him, he’d be well confused cos usually I’m telling him to do something
I think he knows a few swear words now, cos he looks at me funny when I nearly crash the land rover, as if to say that was close

RS Grant got there before me - directing my voice at him is usually for a command
my brothers dog goes crazy when you say my dad's name, Mark - but i think this is for 2 reasons.. it sounds like park and he usually ends up walking it
