i have fitted a 3.6 td vm engine in my car. engine holds about 8 litres of oil do i need an oil cooler ?

you need to monitor oil temps before anyone can answer that.

i would personally like to see an oil temp of 100 degs, to completely evepaorate all moisture in it, but you dont want it to go too high

dont know havnt got a gauge. i need to fit know if im gonna use one while im building the car but im rapidly running out of room

a thermostic one is what i run, it seems to work well on my t4 engine

im thinking wont need one as its got an 8 litre sump and a 3.6 turbo diesel only revving to 4000 rpm.

just wondering if one would generally be needed for my application ?
