what part broke? if u take the airbox out u can take the selector out the top of the box, its a pain in the arse to re-fit as theres not a lot of room to move it and u need a hand on the rod that comes out the bottom so u can line the selector back up when it goes in!

box out, strip down, etc

assuming it's the mtx75 box?

from what i can recall, it's the same as found in all the other cars, the 4wd bit goes in the driveshaft side of things

there are 3 selectors in the box

plus the little pin that does the selecting arrangement to give it the H shift pattern
this pin sometimes snaps and you are stuck with it selecting 2 gears at the same time

Ah so the only way to get them all lined up again once one fails is a strip down!

you dont have to take the box out at all, when u put selector back in the ball part on the rod locates into a thing like a tube which is connected to the rod the gear lever connects to, u have to turn this as u slide the selector down so the ball sits in the end of the tube.... its a pain in the arse but it can be done as i had to!!! hope u can understand that!!

the 3 selectors in the top of the box are ok, the old selector unit was damaged in the way you say, the top part had snapped, the unit in the pic is the replacement i got from another box although it was fwd, its the same as the one thats broke, just need to know how to get it back in,
thanks for the info so far dojj

this is the problem im having, would it be an advantage to drain the oil from the box, would i be able to see where the ball has to go?

might be better to if u can see oil in there, the one i did was already empty, it took a lot of time and patience to do it but it can be done, admittedly its a piece of piss with the box on the floor as u can see what you r doing! disconnect the gear lever under the car so u can move the rod that goes into the box....

would it be no good having some one sat in the car who was able to move the gear stick from side to side to locate the ball?

you could try that but i dont think you will get enough movement on the rod to locate the ball? i did the job myself so i had to do it that way!

you need to twist the rod so the tube points up to the hole u can see in! then when the ball is close u have to let the tube come down with the ball, easier said than done but i have faith u will crack it! its a lot of work to change the box for a gear selector!!!!

im going to drain the box as the tube cant be seen with the oil in it,
ive had the box out a couple of times before so that doesnt bother me,
