....not aimed at mechanics in general - but you really have got to wonder what planet some of them are on & their lack of common sense!!!
One of my exs blew her turbo on her Seat Ibiza TDI sport so I sourced her a new one. She had already taken it into a garage and they had stripped her old one off ready for the new one (otherwise I would of fitted it myself).
Anyway I dropped the turbo off yesterday - brand new KKK turbo with fitting kit, gaskets, new bolts, & a syringe of oil...
I get a txt today off the lad whos fitting it....
'Whats the syringe of oil for mate?'
I mean.....really - even my ex knew what that was for!!!

Felt like telling him thats for lubing up your customers arses when you give them the stupidly large bill for your shitty quality knowledgeless labour!!!

secondly post the PM
to put oil in the turbo before you hook it up to the oil feed to stop the bearings running dry for the first few seconds yes?
or is it really to lube up the customers bottoms?

mate it's worse here the mrs asked me to look at a friends vw golf over here she'd taken it in to the local garage as it had started to die and smoke a lot, they told her it needed a full rebuild and wanted $5000 to sort it out. i thought it would be fooked as this is what i was told it turned out to be the air filter it was blocked solid with dust from useing a short cut through the forestry. i had to blow it out as getting a new air filter for a 2000 vw golf is hard work lol. if it's not holden or ford here forget it the local autobarn have fook all but you could get a dizzy cap for a 1960's holden off the shelf
TBH Ive changed loads of Turbos on VW's. The modern stuff actually run on a film of oil. (if you get the shaft and wiggle it it wil move a fair amount) So sticking a small amount of oil in, whilst it wont hurt, most of it will leak out before you have a chance to finish the job.
Theres not really much point in worrying about the 2 seconds it takes for Oil pressure to build up. Its not like your caining it at that time. What do you think your camshaft journals are doing immediately after startup?

No, I meant the Modern VWs as opposed to the older ones

I agree with you about the speed difference. My point was really that eventually all engines and turbos die. And its got very little to do with that thimble of oil put in (or not) when the unit was brand new. Poor maintenance would cause more problems IMO

rich, you lube up EVERY mechanical part before you start it for the first time. what do you think camlube is for?
the turbo as it comes out of the box is BONE DRY!

No, you numpties I mean after the cars sat overnight!
And you 1st start it at 5 degrees C at 7am Theres going to be wear on those moving parts.
Cam lube is because the lobes need to bed in to the followers/shims. Do brand new Turbos need the bearings running in? Or have the Manufacturers already made them properly and tested them?
On a related anal point. I read on a BMW forum about an owner who would drain the oil, drain his oil cooler. Put in crap oil. Refill it, run it for 15 mins then disconenct everything again and put in decent oil. "To cut down on excesive engine wear" Waste of time priamrily because even leaving a n engine draingin for a week you arent getting ALL the oil out. And secondarily (word?
) In X thousands miles you arent going to make that much extension to the service life/performance.

Certainly not going to make the difference between 1K and 200K. And as I say. Turbo manufs do actually test the units they build.
Oh and dont believe the Magnatec inteligent molecules nonsense. Its not even very good oil! Regardless of which car makers "recommend" it. Its just made to the price it is and sold by marketing guys to gulible punters!
