Default the SS Richard Montgomery was on tv today

on a program called COAST..so i did a bit google searching tonight very intresting

They say that if the ship
did go up, she would create a tidal wave across the flat expanses of the Kent coast — and
one of the largest non-nuclear explosions the world has ever seen.

yet how CLOSE is this container ship passing it

At this point it should be pointed out again that the explosives on board constitute a bomb on the kiloton scale. This is the power of a small atomic blast. Imagine a 300-metre-wide wall of water being blasted three kilometres into the sky. With the towns of Sheerness and Southend-On-Sea, not to mention the oil refineries of Canvey Island and Thames Haven, in close proximity, the effects of the blast would be catastrophic.

Yes it potentially could explode if triggered. The chances of getting a uniform explosion including sympathetic detonation of all the explosives on board is extremely unlikely.

The bouys constitute whats considered a safe distance.

Over the years twenty four near misses have been recorded, and once a cargo vessel actually hit the wreck knocking down one of her guns and demolishing a ventilator. What the consequences of a large passenger ferry hitting the wreck would be God only knows,

Can you imagine how big the blast would have been if it was fully laden with explosives still. If I recall they did do a salvage operation on the ship and removed tons of explosives... interesting stuff
