Default Dog knowledgeable people in here please :-)

It's been a few years now since my Rottie passed away (proper miss him) so I'm thinking of getting another dog now but I want an English Mastiff or aDogue de Bordeauxbut I don't really know much about these dogs so I'm hoping you people will tell me the main differences between them & also the temperament etc of the two dogs.

Oh if you have either dog & have any pics of them as a puppy & fully grown I'd love to see them

Thankyou please

A guy I used to work with has a Mastiiff horse cross, the thing is fucking huge, but the softest thing in the world, was proper soft and gentle when his kids were crawling all over it.

have a look on google for any rescue charities for the mentioned dogs, or forums to do with the breed. I have an english bull terrier and there's a rescue for them. the wife wants a jack russell and theres 1 for that breed, its worth a look, forum would be better, try and also find out insurance prices ( our bullie costs more than my focus to insure) also try and find average life expectance and common illness

Thats my tuppence worth anyway

OH MY GOD! where do i start?

Right....

First of all... if your dog is ever gonna be around kids, i would recommend a Dogue over and English Mastiff..... purely for clumsiness.... the english is a massive dog and is very clumsy! the dogue is still clumsy, but just not as much!

They both have FANTASTIC temperaments, if they have been raised properly, the english tends to be more territorial than a dogue though!

THIS is a VERY realistic size of an English mastiff:

and they can be VERY stubborn, so if you're out on a walk, and he doesnt wanna move... guess what..... you aint moving!

The english mastiff come sin a variety of colours! Red, fawn, brindle, blue, and the dogues only come in red!

This was smelly, my dogue, when she was fully grown:

On the downside though... the bigger the dog, the less its lifespan is likely to be, smelly died when she was nearly ten, which was a good innings for a dogue, and english mastiffs tend to live a little shorter life.

There are so many dedicated rescue sites to the Molosser breeds, ( dogues, bull mastiffs, neopolitan mastiffs, english mastiffs ) and there is a fantastic frum that does their best to rehome some of the dogs,

http://z11.invisionfree.com/molosserbreedspart2/

you have to register, but once you do you have access to a wealth of molosser experts, and also access to all of the rescue societys as they often have lots of pups that need homes too!

Ok, i am slightly bias and i would say go for the dogue, smelly was the most well mannered and the best behaved dog i have ever had, she never had to be walked on a lead, and was so so loving... and she was a rescue dog from Battersea dogs home in old windsor!

Good luck honey with whatever you decide to do and i will help in any way i can!

Any reason why you've restricted yourself to these two breeds?

Staffies make great dogs, loyal and strong but soppy as you like at the same time.
Similar sort of qualities to what you're after afaik only smaller so easier to live with. (and thats not a dig, they just take up less space in the home/car etc..)

If the dog won't walk because he is stubborn, is this not lack of training? Shouldn't he do as his master says?

Trust me benni when you have a 15 stone dog, no matter how well it has been trained, if it doesnt want to do something, it wont!

Has nothing to do with obediance. unless it is petrified of its master.

I'd like to disagree but I wouldn't know so will take your word for it. I just assumed it was all about what the owner wanted to do. I know when I take my mums dog out I can't take it off the lead as he won't come back.

Also, he only does as I ask him inside the house. 15 stone crazy, I'd love a dog that big.

I was gonna say have you ever owned a dog of a similar breed?

different breeds have different characteristics,

Jack russells - Hyperactive
Dobermans - Territorial
Dalmations - bond with only one person
Bulldogs - Lazy

Mastiffs - STUBBORN!

I haven't, so I took your word for it. However, we have a Shih-Tzu and he has issues. Last night he was growling at the window so I shouted at him, he growled at me and as I walked towards him he was snapping at me.

Then, as I was pissed off I pinned it to the floor until he calmed down and not ten minutes later he took a shit in MY bedroom. I swear he shat in MY room as payback? I just assume if he showed me the respect I deserve as his owner, he wouldn't have the nerve to do it?

Bastard.

I agree with Maria when it comes to Bulldogs. They ae very lazy and well known throughout the dog training world as a dog that cant be trained.

If I had the choice of the two, it would be a Dogue . The dogs are a lot bigger than the bitches as far as im aware.

These are my mates in Spain

Hooch

and

Loca.

To be honest I trust the Dogues around Children far more than I do my Bulldog.

Fanstastic Dogs... If I had a bigger gaff I would get one

Yep, got to agree with that one, mines 15 months now and he aint learning anything else, he can sit for food and thats his lot no matter how hard I try to teach him things. My staffy picked everything up so easy, this big lump just likes to sleep and do as he pleases!
As for having a 15st dog, christ I weigh that and I certainly wouldnt want all that weight jumping on the bed to wake you up!!!

Do Douge's dribble 'A HELL OF A LOT'?

The reason I ask is because I happened to bump into a woman taking one out for a walk & I stopped her to ask her some questions & in about 5 minutes of talking to her the dog dribbled a small pond of saliva on the floor & over it's mouth oh & the owners shoes

Porkie has your mum thought about a Ridgeback Bitch, ours is coming up to it's 10th birthday. My sister got her when she was 6 years old, knew her from her a pup. She has a perfect temprement.

She hates her photo being taken

My mate Lee has just got this below, 18months old. His head is still splitting due to growth. The parents of his dog turned out to be 10st for mother and 14 for father so he's gonna be a big chap
