Default DIY turbo rebuild?

Is this something that can be done? Reason i ask is the turbo has shat itself on the 306 derv daily hack, ive got a GT15 to go on, but given that its a complete nightmare to change im wondering if its worth getting one of those kits off ebay and rebuilding it myself before i fit it.

Ive heard various horror stories about them needing to be balanced after and such, but i figure as long as i dont split the compressor wheel off the shaft it wont need balancing? The turbo shows no sign of damage on the blades or housing and there is minimal play in the bearing, i just wanted to sort the seals out before i fit it just to be on the safe side.

Opinions?

confidence has got nuthing to do with balancing a shaft if you want to change the seals/barings/anythink within a turbo its got to come apart.

there is a good reason that people can charge £300+ for a rebuild

if you havent got the proper tools or the know how then it wont last very long. the clown that rebuilt my turbo did so 3 times in less than a year(under gaurantee) before i gave up on the tit and bought a new one.

i rebuilt the turbo on my old 200sx with a kit.

as it was a pile of shit, i didnt even bother to mark the nut and shaft etc, just done it.

the car smoked like a complete twat before hand, if i stopped, after about 5 seconds i couldnt see the car behind it was that bad lol.

cained the shit out the car for the next few months after without a single problem, and didnt hear from that chap i sold it to if it shit the turbo or not either, and he uses this board lol, so im sure i would have if it did.

up to you mate, if its a £50 shitter, them IMO id DIY it.

if its a 20k car, it get it done properly
