Crank Timing Marks?

Hi there has anyone ever timed up a cvh crank without having the lower cover on? im desperate and have no cover im guessing that its got to be basically vertical on the block?? please help asap!! cheers

best way to do it is see where the piston is,piston 1 is just b4 TDC
