Default My trackcar project.

hello all,

As you can see from my post count, im new to this forum. I thought i would make a break from the norm and rather than post in general i would start off in here with some pics of my trackcar. (bare with the text, it'll give a chance for the pics to come up )

It all started during a trip to the Nurburgring in my <cue spitting> Impreza WRX Sti5. After an excellent weekend, and to the suprise of myself, my wife suggested buying a designated trackcar instead of thrashing our beloved scooby.

So after careful consideration, and with my dad being an old school Ford mechanic, i decided against the likes of the common (but good) Pug 205 GTi and Golf GTi and begun the search for a Fiesta XR2i .

Eventually, In April I found and bought a std 1990 XR2i 8v for 200 quid of Ebay. On driving it home and after doing a compression test i found it to be runnning on only 3 cylinders , so off came the head and in it went for a de-coke and skim. While it was in it had a new cam, followers and the valves reseated. The engine was cleaned and put back together with all new senders etc etc. The only non standard modification to the engine so far is the cotton green filter - as it turned out to be cheaper than a Ford OEM one.

Once the engine was rebuilt it was time to strip the interior. out came more or less everything appart from the dash itself.

Then it went to a friend of the family who happens to build rally cars and a 6 point fully welded roll cage was fitted. Along with this, a Cobra Imola 2 bucket seat and a sparco 3 point harness went in.

Then, over a period of the next few months the Fox Evo3 15's, Mountney alacantra steering wheel, DTM Mirrors were sourced and fitted.

After all this i drove it home and something was still very wrong - it handled like a bag of shyte. The steering was all over the place and with the newly rebuilt engine being run in, i noticed that the clutch was slipping a lot. I fitted a new steering rack and then handed it over to a friend that happens to work for Ford .

2 weeks later it had new sills, a new clutch, new CV joints and the tracking/steering had been adjusted (16 degrees out ).

When i drove it then it was like a different car - it now goes like a scolded cat pulling all the way to the red line and handles like a dream.

Now, some of you may be thinking......... 'thats sitting very high'....... well, this weekend i have the joy of fitting some very newly acquired AVO coilovers and (pending a deal) to help it stop, some escort cosworth calipers with uprated discs & pads.

All in all its cost me about 3 grand so far. Still on the cards are:

Another Imola 2 so i can scare my missus to death
A full sports exhuast system
Have the dash flocked
Custom instrument panel & oil press/temp gauges.
V.thin ally door cards
Possibly a new paint job
Decals

With a bit of luck it will be on Donnington next sunday (21st) for its first taste of whats to come.

Hope i havnt bored you and don't hold a grudge against me for owning a scooby

Chris
