Default insurance write off question....

missis car has had assesor out to it today, if it gets wrote off, how long is it before it is taken off us?? and is there anything stopping me taking all trick bit out of it? ie tvs, boost controllers etc etc. Also its on a private plate, i will be able to get that off wont i???

when do they decide its unecinomical to repair? is it a % of car value?

Have you thought about asking your insurance company these questions, then you'd actually get a legitimate answer?

don't let them take the car to one of the garages for starters

then remove anything that you haven't declared

then wait for the cheque to arrive

there may be some haggling inbetween the cheque being written for the ammount you want and it appearing through your letter box

been there, done that, plenty of times, but it does also depend on how bad it's been bent as they may want a scraped car document from you after you've had the vehicle dismantled before they send you some money

you'll get in more trouble if they collect the car and theres bits on there you havent declared. bits that are declared, ask the insurance.

had this a few times mate.

You have a few options, first up, is the car with you??? if so, and the insurance write it off, aske them what they want for it as salvage.

You can then see if they will take a counter offer to keep it where it is (remember they have to pay to get it removed), keep the offer reasonable.

Paid 80 quid for an xr3i of mine and that was 10 years ago and they paid me out the agreed value less the 80.

REMOVE anything that is not declaired, and remove items that aren't specifically listed, but ensure it is still a running car ie dont strip if rims and leave it on the floor, or engine parts and make it a non runner.

Same with things like sound equipment, if they aint paying you more for it, remove it.

Some places wont let you buy it, but that iirc is if it is a cat A or B.

not really relevant, but a few years back a mate had a spanking 205 he had a bump in it and a garage recovered it, and also assessed it for the insurance company.

The car had brand new - alloys, s/s exhaust, grill, suspension and sound system.

The garage told the insurance it was a major write off, and could not be put back on the road and that NO parts should be removed!!!

When he went to the garage they handed him his stereo and a few personal belonging, but that was it.

Funny enough, the lads who worked there were all into their modded motors and cruises, wonder how much of those trick bits got stripped off?? and why it was so heavily recorded on a light bump??

Who's car is it ?
Exactly it is YOUR car, no insurer can "write it off" unless you agree on a settlement, as it is your property and not thiers, you own it not them.
If they write it off it becomes thier property as you have accepted payment for it.
So therefore ONLY settle on the basis that you keep the salvage, which if very old will be the scrap price.
Remember they cannot settle unless you agree, they cannot just send you what they think it is worth, the most they could do is ask that you sign a disclaimer if you buy the salvage.
Done this 3 times, last car had £428 worth of damage, was going to be written off by insurer, but instead I opted to take repair costs, AS ANYONE HAS A LEGAL RIGHT TO, still not repaired as only a slight cosmetic dent in 1/4 panel, and car is still insured with same insurer on same policy.
If the estimate comes back at say £500 you are entitled to have the money paid to you and choose whether to repair yourself, leave as is(if driveable) etc perfectly legal.

just been thru this with my jeep getting hit by an idiot and writing it off only couple months back
my insurance company wanted 20% of the value to keep the car
i got to keep my p/plate, they offered to send it back to me after they had disposed of the car
mine got assessed and the guy told me that day that it would be a write off but was over a week before the insurance could confirm this as they had to get a full written report from the engineer before they confirm it as uneconomical to repair,
it then was passed to another dept to value it
was a comlplete nightmare took over 3 months from accident till the cheque finally arrived, even then it wasn't for the full amount, still waiting for my excees back and that was from aprill
