Default oh dear-subaru problems!

ive had many imprezas and they have all been strong and problem free.......

until now!

ive done 130 miles since friday in the type r impreza i recently bought, standard car, relatively easy driving as i wanted to make sure everything was ok.it developed a very slight rattle i thought may have been a heat shield but it got worse last night and now sounds like a bottom end rattle.

was due to have oil change today just be safe as its a fresh import

im sure this will make all you ford people feel better......

It seems to be par for the course with these.

I don't think i'd even drive it over here until it was mapped for UK fuel. I was fortunate with my STi Type R in that it was imported from new and mapped for 98RON back in the day.

Give API a bell and they'll take you through the options. Can also source brand new closed decks from Japan. That's what the previous owner stuck in mine about 10k miles ago.

All the best with getting it sorted.

Crank can't walk it a flat engine....

Its just the design - 300bhp from 2 litre for 70k miles is about all you get.

The bearing surafces are tiny compared to older designs.

Then people skip oil changes and thrash them from cold and its new engine time.

its only done 56000 miles with jap history.

anyway the guys i got it from are sorting it out for me in a couple of weeks so not too bad after all.
i havent really been driving it hard either,as i was waiting for a genuine oil filter to come so i could change the oil, plus i wanted to get it set up for uk fuel(ran it on v-power though).
hopefully it should all be fine.pisser though as i really like the car.

Alex, what do you recommend as the oil service interval? Which oil do you recommend?

I tend to do it between 3 & 4k, usually closer to 4 though! Always run on 99ron.

If mine goes pop I think I'd be tempted to look for more power.

4k will be fine with a gen filter and I run Millers 10w60 depending how long it takes to do those 4k miles.

I notice mine getting a wee bit tappety when it's due a change.

Jay - 56k is a decent life for the engine. As Alex said, 70k max is about all you can hope for as nobody drives then like a Granny.

Just think of all the poor sods with P1's that go at 30k cos of the MAF. That'll cheer you up.

i purposely avoided the p1 because they have engine trouble.

but there are so many type r out there for sale with engine rebuilds that i suppose i should have realised.looks like its only going to cost me Ł100 to get it sorted though.

piston slap on V3/V4 is normal when cold.

Only engines I really like on the Imprezas are the V2 and V6 engines.

If an engine ever let go on me I'd buy a complete new built bottom end from America rather than getting a rebuild, they don't seem to last long once rebuilt for some reason.

A lot of Type r's do seem to have had rebuilds.

There's gotta be more to it than just the small bearing design because if you look on ebay there's dozens on 120k mile+ Uk imprezas on there.

Bearings can be killed by Det - it shock loads the bearings.

UK spec cars make about 30% less power so like about 50% longer.....

I would change your oil every 3k and use somthing like Castol Edge 10w60.
