Default any interesting family history?

I was told a couple of years ago of my great great grandfather winning a vitoria cross in WW1.
I visited the museum in Hamilton yesterday to see the replica of the medal that is on display.

My other great great grandfather apparently played in the football matvh in WW1 at the xmas day truce.

does anybody else have any history like that from any of the world wars or even from more recent times.

couple of hundred years ago mind, but all legit:

our family are directly decended from the bastard offspring of one of the royal princes on india back in the day

we can trace our history back to being at the place where sikhism was born in 1699

our grandad was from a notorious lineage of thugs (the word thug originates from his clan)

grandad was a vicous gangster back in the villiage, the most famous guy he killed was the villiage postie when he was about 18

the romours are that he had a hand in killing at least 4 others

he was the local don so the postie he killed when he was 18 was actually acredited to my youngest uncle (who was born "when it was raining", that's how formal the official records are )

he also signed up to fight in ww1, but seeing as the local docrot for the villiage was also the docrot in the field, he got medical discharge after 4 days and spent the rest of his life drawing a military pension

there's lots of "old school" land disputes going on too to this day

one of our distant relatives was cheif of the indian air force during the 70's or 80's for a while too

there are other fairly historical facts about my ancestors, but that's about as much as i've gleaned from the elders about my grandad on my dads side

on my mums side, my grandad was chauffer for the grestest indian wrestler of all time, dara singh, and was fairly minted himself

one my wife's side, one of her uncles used to employ dalip singh, aka the great khali from wwe fame now, as a labourer

i'm sure there are plenty more, but nothing that i can claim as being "heroic"

My Great Great Grandfather owned a chain of grocery stores around London.

During this time, a local competitor, Mr J Sainsbury, approached him and offered to go into partnership with him.

My G G Grandfather declined.

My grandad was in charge of the HMS Belfast But he was Commander or something like that - 1 down from the highest on the ship..... Not bad for someone that started in the Navy as a cooks assistant when he was 15!

My dad got offered a job by alan sugar to be the head electrical engineer and turned him down, this was many years ago for a company called Javlein Electronics (transistor radios). He was also making those flamer kits for cars and bikes in the 70's wish he patented it.

And my grand parents lived on the same street as charley chaplain and used to watch him practice his funny walk. Kensington Gardens I think it was in oval. Now David blunkett lives there as my dad went to take some photo's of his old house and a armed response turned up lol.

My grandfather (Bob Agar) played rugby for Ireland between 1938 and 1948, winning the triple crown and the grand slam - a feat only managed by Ireland on one other occasion in the 80's.

In the late 70's my father developed a cutting edge computer program to simulate the effects of wind vibrations on what was going to be the worlds longest suspension bridge of its time, at the "new" Hong Kong Airport:

My Great Grandad joined the army at 14 and was a drummer boy in the Boer War. He went on to own a freehouse in the Elephant and Castle and he had a scrap iron business too.

My Grandad was a coalman and left the running of the family scrap iron business to his mate, Charlie Richardson

My dad grew up around the Camberwell area and didn't want anything to do with the "scrap iron" business so he started a business with his schoolboy friend Frank Fraser [Junior]. It didn't last long.

He got a job as a mechanic for Stirling Moss in the late 60s/early 70s and stayed in the motor trade ever since.

My Great Uncle had a town farm out Orpington way. He had loads of pigs/dogs/cats/chickens but also had a Russian Bear and a Water Buffalo . The bear got loose once and it made the papers. We have the newspaper cutting as my Dads Cousin caught it after a woman saw it in her garden, he was asked if the woman was scared and he said "No, she just thought it was a bloke in a big fur coat"

I used to date a girl who traced her family tree back and were directly related to Baron Von Richthoffen - aka "The Red Baron". Funny thing, her Dad was Maltese, so it wasn't expected....

I've never done anything about ours, as I always wanted to leave myself something to do when I retired .

My Nan traced our family tree back and turns out i'm related to Christopher Wren (coincidence we have the same first name!!) on my dads side (dude that designed St Pauls Cathedral.

Also my Nan's brother was Linford Christie's coach / trainer back in his hey day, not his drug days!!

And not as famous but used to play football in the same team as James Harper who's been at Reading for a couple of seasons!!
