What is going on with PF these days, it seems the moderation is becoming more and more intrusive!? Finally we see a genuinely interesting thread containing some relevant technical discussions re engine dyno's that is closed because a moderator (for the sake of clarity read Maria) didn't see the value in that thread.

I don't understand? I could see nothing different to any usual discussion between a group of blokes in a pub discussing something of this nature with a degree of name calling interjected for effect. There has been much worse on here, stuff which has been IMHO borderline libel which has gone unmoderated previously so why did this thread receive such heavy handed treatment?

I'd like to hear from Maria why she felt the thread needed to be handled as she did - it just strikes me of an over reaction? Perhaps my skin is too thick these days! My aim is not to reopen the dyno discussion, its pretty clear its not welcome here but am genuinely interested to hear what this forum is for if it isn't for the education and sharing of information of its users.

Example:
Maria: I swear to go you've all said the same things about twenty times now.
Maria: Right i am telling you all NOW. I think you have all had to say what you need/want. This thread WILL be locked at 4pm. So get what ever you want off your chests now. Any insults, name calling or profanities, will be dealt with in the normal manner.
Maria: ACTUALLY i have changed my mind. 3.30pm its getting locked. And i dont want to see another related thread.

Surely its our 'right' to say (and read!) the same thing 20 times if we want. Obviously we hadn't said all "we" wanted as the thread wouldn't still be going when you judged it to be time to end. There are ways to deal with name calling other than taking away the users ability to discuss.

Sorry if this sounds harsh but IMHO a very meaningful discussion was prematurely closed and I'd hate to see PF become a place where users were unable to discuss freely matters relating to Ford vehicles etc.

I completely agree. I have told Maria I do not think she is a good moderator. She is a great person but not a good moderator. If a thread warranted locking then it would be locked. Not locked at a certain time. It can't be that bad if it has been allowed to stay open. Then, out of nowhere she decided we never had it open for an hour, we had 30 minutes.

She comes across more like our parents than a moderator. There was no real name calling, just a heated debate and she stopped it. In another thread, Rods latest one she told people to stay on topic. Since when does a thread on here ever stay on topic? However, I will say the photography competition she does is one of the best things ever. But her moderating in general is too full on for a laid back forum such as this one.

This is just my opinion; I am in no way going out to offend Maria and just stating what I think.

The whole point of that thread being kept open by Maria was to give Norri a chance to
post the graphs up... thus giving Mr Rainbird a further which did happen eventually.


EDIT: It was clear Maria was dying to press the 'lock' button (which was needed IMO) but was asked to wait just long enough for the relevant pics to be posted...
IMO it was a bit of a tricky situation and Maria would never of 'won' either way,
as it would upset a few more people if it was locked as soon as she saw it...

But I have seen threads, for example when Dojj got completely abused for being a wrestling fan, left open forever. Nobody broke the rules. and if they did they should be warned, surely?

I've got nothing against Maria - she seems like a good person and people speak well about her but the moderation of that thread really summed up a lot of whats up with PF these days, dodgy moderation. She is only "singled out" because she is the moderator who handled the thread - I would have thought that was obvious?

It is about a different thread to this topic though, so quite confusing.

I assume this topic is about the new thread, the one that Diva linked to, which was locked by Maria.

She was a bit over the top with the moderation, but TBH it needed something, so I dont actually think she did the wrong thing persoanlly

 

some mods are to heavy handed.. have to have a say in every little thing and when they do they try do belittle you i was on a thread the other day when a kid was asking about a letter and our opinions on it.. we told him and maria comes on saying we should give the kid a break etc we have a warning..i ask what the warning was for and she had no clue..she said we repeated ourselves 20 times.. im 99,99% sure i can repeat myself as many times as i want until my point is across?? yes the boy was 15 years old and we were harsh but its the real world.

My honest opinion was Maria gave EVERYONE fair enough warning to calm down on the personal comments being made, yet they still carried on, I honestly thought she was enjoyin the thread too as most of it was either technical or Mike gettin ribbed !!

Personally I quite like seein Mike gettin ribbed but a few things where a bit OTT, sayin that tho some of Mike's comments were on the previous thread. But 2 wrongs don't make a right !!

I honestly think Maria delt with it the best way she (anyone really) could & even gave everyone time to get what they wanted to say accross which isn't usually done !!

So I don't think the moderation was harsh or OTT & she (the mods) kept it open for as long as possible, while still tryin to calm peoples down & get the thing back on track !!

Personally I thought the thread was very good, apart for those hand full of coments.

what amazes me about this place and it's moderation is the fact that they close a thread and infract members within that thread Namely the Rolling road thread which does contain topical relavenece................YET they allow threads to remain open that contain discussion about a mans arse hole throbbing.....

Dave - you were made fully aware of why you receieved an infraction. check your pms.
Its an infraction.... its not like we've cut your arm off... its simply a way of amking you aware we feel that your conduct was uneccessary.

Helen - I have only just come online therefore didnt see Rich's thread, if i had, an infraction would of been issued.

For the rest of you - If any of you feel i am not capable of being a moderator, please dont hesitate in contacting Stu to let him know, he will completely and unbiasly take on board everything you all have to say.


We cannot be on this site 24 hours a day to make sure that all threads are moderated in exactly the same way, trust me, if we could we would, but this job is done voluntarily. And when moderators are continuously bombarded with pm's about certain members, then our tolerance with said member will un doubtidly lessen. When we DO moderate, we get shot down in flames, when we DONT moderate, we get shot down in flames.

People were given enough opportunities to discuss the dyno thing sensibly, but after several insults i felt it was appropriate to close the thread, as did the majority of the members that participated.

I seem to notice that is is the same few that tend to disagree with the way i do things. As moderators, we try to be as even as we can, but we are only human, therefore it is reasonable to say we will also moderate in different ways. That is why we have a wide variety of moderators on here, for an even balance.

As said above, if you dont like the way i moderate, please contact stu.

Just think fair is fair and maybe Rich should have an infraction too. Seeing as he did exactly what dave did yesterday.

i hope no-one takes this personally as thats not the way it is intended.

 

If someone wants to make an official post about a moderator or company, then please do so in a seperate topic in the policies forum, i will read it as long as the issues are laid out concisely and that all evidence is presented to me in the correct manner with no bickering or off topic discusion.

Before anyone asks why that room is gold members only, this forum costs many thouands of £££s to run and people who contribute financially to its upkeep with their memberships are given the ability to discuss policy changes etc in a room away from those who dont really care how its run and dont contribute, choosing only to use its free facilities. This keeps the process cleaner. I am sure everyone on here, especially the businessmen reading, will fully understand that policy.

Interestingly, we have a post report system in place that would have sorted whatever this probem is at the time of offence. It is interesting to note that nobody appears to have used it for anything big that i can see with a quick scan, so maybe the issue isnt as big as some are making out? In fact, did a moderator lock it at all, have we decided that one yet?

If people arent happy with my administration of the site, they can also go higher, to the site owners, Internet Brands in CA.

 

I don't think Maria's modding was heavy handed, the thread was getting silly. Maybe if instead of locking it all the defamatory posts were removed to just leave a credible technical discussion then it could have remained.
