Default oil getting everywhere

any ideas?

its running a bit rough, its got a slight idle issue, but i have an oil leak from my bottom intercooler hose?

why is there oil in my intercooler? turbo seals?

ive got oil seeping from.....

bottom hose on intercooler,
exhaust manifold,
got little oil in the samco where dump valve is,
the charge pipe,
little in throttle body,
and has prob gone down the pipe from throttle body into my idle control valve
and my plugs are oily?

when under heavy load only there is black smoke which indicates petrol usually.

the car has run fine for 6 months of owning it and all of a sudden yesterday it cut out, ive got it goin again now after cleaning the plugs,it was only a small oil leak now its getting round the engine by looks of it? but what could this be, seals? valve stems? crank case? ive been told allsorts,

has anybody else had these symptons? and where would u start?

1. up to now im gona do a compression test.
2. drop the bottom hose on cooler and see how much oil comes out.
3. clean out charge pipes.
4. clean out idle control valve.
5. drop exhaust as i have another 1 to go on. see how much is in there?

what u guys think?

I would start by removing ALL your boost hoses and cleaning any oil out of them. Any oil in there will continue to spread through the system and fool you into thinking you have a larger leak than you may have. If you start clean then you will know if you have a leak. Also clean the inlet/ outlet of the intercooler for the same reason. Once the hoses are off clean in the metering head 9under the air flap) to ensure that area is clean.

Some oil may be leaking past the turbo seals but dependant on quantity may not be too much of a problem. I would check your turbo shaftw whislt your hoses are removed anyway. remeber, in & out play is bad, but some small rotary movement is acceptable. If the turbo was knackered it would send BLUE smoke out the back end under load so I'm guessing that it's not that, more likely a light seep past the turbo seals and the oil is just spreading very thin (like liquids do) and working it's way through the pipework.

suppose having the wrong oil in it dont help.yeh i think its turbo seals myself but rang a few places to c if they could test the turbo and they said it aint the turbo if its black smoke. but surely if the plugs were oil fouled that would help create the black smoke, not that it smokes that much. shame as its 1 quick escort.

ill take all my hoses off anyway and give em a clean then get the right oil in it,clean icv and do my compession test

any idea what the compression gauge should read on each bore? figure wise?

i wouldnt mind shaun but i had all this with my cavalier turbo few months bk lol

I don't know what compression figures you should have. Having similar figures is a good start, but what values I couldn't say. Get the right oil in as well. 5W/40 or 10W semi-synth should see you right. I use Vaux oil - think there is a topic in here I repleid to last night on oils.

From what I have learned and experienced, its the crankcase filter, located (facing the engine) on the lefthand side of the rear of the rocker cover. Excessive Crankcase pressure pushes the oil thru the filter and into the inlet manifold, thru the crossover/charge pipe, out the d/v, and into the intercooler. Best bets is to remove all the above and give them a good clean and replace the filter. Cheap as chips to replace.

You could have high crankcase pressure and oil could also be gettin passed the breather filter and is then being sucked into the metering head via the breather hose that goes from rocker cover into metering unit,

Take the oil cap off when its running and see if it makes any difference..
If it runs lumpy there is a prob....

I've used to run one with that hose venting to atmosphere and would plug the hole on the metering head, that helps it idle better as plugging that hole makes it fuel more also as the flap is sucked down more.....

But if fuel is getting to the plugs, surely adding more fuel wouldnt do it no good, Chris?

Quite the opposite!!! If it runs lumpy or stalls when you take it off then your breatehrs are not blocked, if it carries on running fine then part of your breather system is blocked up with oil and shit!

anybody got a pic of where that crankcase filter is?

and yeh the plan is to take off every pipe 1 by 1 and clean the lot, once back together ill need to put some treatment in with sum fuel to try clean out whats on top of pistons,

anybody recommend something good? is redex still the best stuff?

Default Cuts out when you take oil cap off !

"Take the oil cap off when its running and see if it makes any difference..

But you say it cuts out, so I think u got bigger prob...

Try this - with car ideling quickly take oil cap off and put your hand over the filler hole,
if there is a fair bit off air pressure there that would indicate pressure is getting into the crankcase...........
cause of that could be -
worn bore / piston, problem piston ring or cracked piston.....
Do a compression test first to assess condition of engine / eliminate that possibility ....
Halfords sell compression testers. well worth buying

You say it just suddenly cut out....
Was u giving it big boost prior to it cutting out ???

Thats good it means your breather system is not blocked, and crank case pressure is being fed back into the metering head like its suposed to.
cris4rst I think your a bit confused mate!? Unless he is EFi the car should cut out if you remove the oil filler cap because that creates a giant air leak preventing the flap in the metering head from being sucked down and giving the car any fuel!

If you whip the oil filler cap off and put your hand over it you should feel suction, if you feel pressure then yeah that indicates possible heavy piston ring/Bore wear etc...

cheers guys, keep suggestions coming,

ive cleaned out throttle housing with carb cleaner, icv and pipes, all breather pipes, intercooler and pipes,

found that none of my rocker bolts were in the slightsest bit tight, and when i started her up its developed a whine from the cambelt or fanbelt, gona have check that, needs doin anyway.

sump nuts bald so need get that off and its having a full service today hopefully. not that confident about doing cambelt yet tho lol

update,

well sounds like alternator bearings, ran it in over 24 hours and has not cut out once, idles better, not as much shite out the back although not give it the hoof yet. feels alot better

so 2nd day i took my mate for some parts up the road and driving along and SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

white smoke bellowing from under bonnet, looked at the gauge and it was red hot so knocked it off straight away

opened the redhot bonnet to find it pissing out water from bottom of rad but looked like it was coming from between ic and rad where i couldnt see, couldnt touch it obviously

shut the bonnet and called it quits for the day, went for a pint while waited for my toe.

in the morn i couldnt get the bonnet up, fookin cable has snapped, anybody gota spare 1 giz a shout! so at the mo its off road, ive gota new thermostat and kit, need new housing as its corroded to death and waiting on a new rad fan swith.

so tmoz hopefully im gona fit thermo, gasket, fan switch, housing all back on, fill rad with water and run up to temperature, see where it leaks from, im hoping its just a hole in the rad and an easy fix(new rad).
