Default zetec black top cambelt issue - pics added

have just timed up my zetec tubo black top and the cambelt is rubbing on the engine metal part of the cambelt cover (the bit that is the actual engine mount section) where there is a ridge on the inside.

has anyone ese come accross this?

the actual part that is rubbing is the toothed side of the belt not the flat side, and its a brand new gates power grip kit with new tensioners and idler....

yep the shim is on the crank and then the toothed pulley.

its not that its to far into the block its too far across.

if you look at the side of the block where it loops around the idler, just below the idler where it is at its closest to the belt where it runs down from the tensoner it rubs on the part of the cover mount effort that is there to split it in half so each belt has a run to go through so to speak....

nope they only go one way as the idler is round with a perfectly central bolt and the idler has a location lug to fit into the cam belt cover back plate.

and its on the idler side anyways not the tensioner side which as its an idler can not adjust.

rst - n sorry as you can only see where and how it rubs when its all in position and can get a camera there to get a tidy pic.... will try and get pcis of everything in pieces tho if that helps...

right here are the pics as promised!

here is the layout of the belt on the blacktop complete with the tensioner on the left and idler on right

close up of idler

rear section of single engine mount includidng the offending potrusion (bit that travels vertically up the middle deviding the centre chamber into two)

mount fitted to engine, can just make out the belt touching the potrusion in the mount.

Any ideas?

mk1 and mk2 black top mix as it got the idler near the crank pulley

DJ cossie - yes there are 2 different zetecs - one is a sliver top and one a black top!

all the black tops have the same cambelt and pulley layout, you are thinking of the silver top having the idler by the crank.

MD cos - i would of if it came with any pulleys.... but unfortunatly it didnt so couldnt check against origional

have just noticed that the timing is slightly out on the 2nd pic tho so will have to check that again tomorrow but that wouldnt cause the rubbing

cant you just grind down the bit thats touching the belt? i dont think it would weaken it to any extent.

md - yeah that would be a great help mate if you could.

lloyd, if all else fails then yes i can but i would like to get to the bottom of the cause ratehr than just curing the symptoms as the cam belt is a critical part of the build i dont want any chance of it failing cos something is wrong!

the tensioner on the one i've just measured is 60.1mm and the idler was 60mm. It was from a mk2 mondeo, one of the earliest blacktops. Hope that helps

and the worst thing is he's right As far as I know there is Series 1 (Silvertop) Series 2 (blacktop without protruding writing from rocker cover), Series 3 (Blacktop with protruding writing from rocker cover) & ST170. I didn't really know the differences between them before now tbh, but it might be worth going into your local motor factors and investigating don't just take my word for it, because as I said, I'm unsure
