i know it's a AMG but what modles were/are to take on the BMW's M cars..???........new and old..and are they any good

 

i would say the C Class AMG is merc version on a M3 and the E Class AMG is their version of the M5

 

c43amg and e55 amg maybe

 

the amg series had differnet engine sizes too. c class, c36,c43 etc

personally though i still think one of the best cars they did was the 190 cosworth.handled really well for a car in that era and looks lovely. would still bu a saff over it though lol

 

that the thing with the mercs....................too many varients

 

C36 AMG is a 3.6 Straight 6 with 280bhp
C43 AMG is a 4.3 V8 with 306bhp

E36 same as above
E55 AMG is a 5.5 V8 with 360bhp.

ALL are automatic.

The 43 and 55 superceded the 36.

They're all slower than the M's.

they're more "cruisers" than the sportier M car's.

if you want to be driven somewhere, choose a merc.
if you want to drive somewhere, choose an M car.

 

i dont think merc market any of their range ad M competetors

deffo not the M3 anyway. maybe the M5/M6

 

e55 amg estate FAST! my boss has one, my missus boss has an sl55 amg thats stupidly quick too, prefer the noise it makes though lol

Fellow member at the golf club got a CL65 AMG, 612bhp and brake discs the size of cossie wheels.

In the pic below its got 20" wheels and the discs are 390mm. Calipers looks as evil as Darth Vader.

 

Depends what era M3 etc you're talking about .

The 190 2.3-16 Cosworth was the DIRECT competitor to the E30 M3. If you look on Spiky's Ring post, there is a picture of one of the Evo versions of one of these . After that, they're all slush box pieces of shit .

In my opinion, this is the only time they built something to directly compete. Other than that, they're after an different "market".

 

Id say the new C63 AMG is "nearly" an M3 v8 equivalent, only the 7 spead auto box makes it slightly less of a drivers car

The E63 AMG IMO is everybit as good as the V10 M5 in both saloon and estate/touring modes

The CLS 63 amg is as good as the M6....

Both have the positives and the negatives, it all depends what floats your boat.

Ive been lucky enough to drive most of the current AMG models and defy anyone not to be impressed by them. Likewise i bet most of the BM M series are just as good!

Personally for sheer noise appeal, have a listen to some of the AMG C63's on you tube.... gorgeous!

c36 and c43 only problem being is they are auto's, they are excellent cars and very fast! but not really a direct competitor to an m3 imo

i have a c280 sport (manual) track car and it easily keeps up with my mates e36 328 but the m3 is in a different league

 

Have a mate with a C55 AMG (part exed it today for an M6). which is no faster than my car. Would beat an E46 M3 by a few car lengths to 120ish.

E55 AMG is supposed to be good, dont know much about them
The new C63 AMG is faster than the New M3 in a straightline.

 

AS said boss has a e55 amg and for an hurse its stupidly quick

 

I found the m3 was better from 80 upwards then 0-60- anyone else think this?

 

I would've thought it been the CLK55 AMG and the new CLK63 AMG to rival the M3 because the M3 is a coupe and the CLK is Merc's coupe version of it's exec saloon class

As far as I am aware Merc produced a CLK32 AMG, CLK55 AMG and CLK63 AMG. I am saying that the CLK is the M3's rival not the C class AMG variants that others have stated since they are saloons and the CLK is a coupe (which is what the M3 is bar the E36 saloon).

It's still the same base chassis though. All Merc have done is change the engine and called it something different each time. Think they started off with a 3.2 V6 supercharged, then went onto a 5.4 or 5.5 V8 that you could have with or without the supercharger, then their latest one is some 6. something litre with or without turbos, aint a clue lol, it's too confusing!

BMW have just consistently called the M3, the M3 which has had different engines over the years like the Merc, but not so much variation.

 

IMHO BMW has NO competition from Merc
