Default Group A Intercooler

What intercoolers did the Factory cars use for tarmac rallying ? I see a lot of people using the really large alloy ones, but did Ford themselves use this type or just an improved standard one ?
Cheers

The factory cars listed a standard esc cos intercooler pt no. 6683878

The coolers were modified to accept w/i nozzles and that was it AFAIR.....

Many thanks for that.
Has anyone noticed a considerable difference with a large alloy one, particularly using a 34mm restrictor ?
My car has a big alloy RS500 one at the moment and its been recommended to me to change back to a standard one to reduce turbo lag.
I may just see if I can find a cheap standard one and do a back to back test.

Depending on which make of RS500 one you have, I would retain this. There is a significant improvement over air charge temps with the larger one than the ickle Ford one.

I can't imagine you noticing much difference in lag, as the volume isn't that much greater, the extra efficiency is gained in surface area.....

As mike says, if its a decent spec cooler, then you shouldn't notice any difference, what spec of turbo and management do you run on the car?

What boost control is on the car? How much boost do you run?

I'm using a Pro alloy RS 500 intercooler with a T4 turbo, Pectel P8 management and air to air injection. The boost is around 1.6 bar.

The Escort intercooler would be inadequate for this arrangement, so stick with the RS500 item. You can improve the boost threshold by swinging the cams, but this has the potential to require a re-map.

Who originally set up the car?

The car has a Tommy Field head, and he mapped it last year. I've just got the correct cam timing figures from him so I'll be checking that nothing has changed.
Thanks for the advice.
