you need the key in the ignition. remove the top and bottom halves of the plastic covers in front of the steering wheel. look at the bottom part of the ignition barrel , there is a cutout where you can stick a flat screwdriver in. i think the key must be in the on position when you push with the flat screwdriver , it should simply slide out

 

remove the 2 halves of the steering column shrouds, turn your key to position 1, and on top of the section the barrel sits in is a little hole, put a pointed object in to the hole and push this down and pull on the key and the barrel should slide out.

 

On the same subject, mine is starting to become difficult to turn the steering lock off whats the best way to sort this will it be the barrel or is it something else.

 

putting the key in the ignition is NOT an option

 

In that case you need to undo the 2 snap off bolts that hold the steering lock on IE there will be no heads left to use a socket on you need to knock them loos with a hammer and chisel
