cant do this if leaving th box in as the block cant come down bcoz of the driveshaft and the anti roll bar,
the way ive done it a few times is buy breaking engine into to ie, head off with manifold ect, then unbolt all bolts that are around the bell housing, jack with a bit wood on the sump and then completely remove the mount from car and engine, remove waterpump, tensioner and 2 or 3 stronger mates lift it out, there is enuf room but tis tight,
i took the head of mine then realised the pistons were fucked, so i got a couple mates rnd, undid the bells housing bolts and lifted it out, was a bit tricky but we got there in the end just remember to take the bonnet off
ive done it both ways and find it a lot easier to split the box and engine, for the sake of not even 10 bell housing bolts made my life a lot easier, problem i foudn with lifting box and engine out together was space as it passed the brake servo. as youve got a crane id undo exhaust hoses etc undo the ring of bolts, take starter out lever engine aside then lift up. oh but if doing it that way it will make your life easier to loosen the geabox mount nuts front and rear to give the gearbox a bit more movement.

just undo engine mount and remove from block/inner wing, undo gearbox bolts, take off alternator and starter, undo hoses and other wires and lift straight out, very easy to do.

i personally find it easier from below, mine wont go out through the top lol, but both car be dropped together as drive shafts can be split without any problems
I have done prob about 20 engine changes on s2 take starter alternator ,bell housing bolts and rad fans hoses etc and the engine mount on left hand side and take it out with your new crane with the lifting wire slung at an angle remember to keep an watch on the drive shafts as you jiggle the engine off the g-box or the other way is drop it out the bottom if you are gonna work on the struts gearbox shafts i have allways found that this is quicker to drop the whole lot on the floor then lift the car back over it ........Have fun it is all very easy to do ....
take the metering unit out mate, thats a def, it is easyer to take it out from the top but only if you have an engine crane, sayin that tho the quickist way is to undo the roll bars srtusts, engine mounts etc and lift the shell off, but that leves everything in attached, bloody quick mind
