FAO mountain bikers
I have about £1400 to spend on a new hard tail and I 'm going to start with a new Cove Stiffee frame, I want to use the bike for general cross country free riding, no jumps etc.
What components would you recommend I build the bike up with?
I am not an expert but am starting to get into riding now so would appreciate any help.
I will have about £900 once I have bought the frame for all the parts

I did a similar build but instead of the Cove I went for a Cotic BFe frame http://www.cotic.co.uk/ If you aren't doing any jumps then I would definitely recommend you take a look at the Cotic Soul frame...
I then went for some RockShox Pike 454 Coil forks (would probably recommend the air versions if no jumps involved)
Full XT groupset with their shadow mech (From chain reaction)
Mavic ex721 rims on Hope Pro 2 hubs with a bolt in rear hub rather than QR (from Merlin)
DMR V12 magnesium pedals (love them!)
XT servowave brakes with a 200mm front and 180mm rear rotor (love them too!)
Thats about it really... I use big Maxxis Minion DH tyres as well.
The bike is awesome - I have done big XC trails like the beast of brenin (epic!) and trail centers like llandegla and cannock on it which it handles perfectly. I also took it to the alps this summer but to be honest it was a bit out of its depth on the DH stuff due to all the braking bumps into every corner. Any hardtail would struggle out there though!

Imo for that price bracket you would be better of purchasing a complete bike.
You will be hard pushed to build one to a spec the cpmpletes come with now days.
If however you are mind-set on the frame above have a look where i work for componetry from FSA and Marzocchi suspension.

mmmm new bike....theres an idea
I would agree on getting a complete bike for best value if you dont have healthy donor parts.
Some shops will do custom builds but at a much more favourable rate than you sourcing parts.

You can buy a decent complte bike for that money.I got this gem of e-bay 6 months ago
£2000 worth of cannondale for £500.

Didn't like the colour so painted it FOCUS ST ORANGE.

Iv'e upgraded the group set to SHIMANO XTR ,this range looks the bollocks and really performs.

Although building a bike should be personal taste. With £1400 to spend ,you can get a £3000 secondhand bike.
