I fitted my GRS front mount cooler to the Escort this week and now the car is running far too hot. Obviously the cooler blocks the airflow to the rad but I've got twin kenlowe fans, running permanently on and its still getting up in the red around town and I have to keep pulling over and leaving it for 30 mins to cool down. Its an alloy rad as well so I dont see why it shouold be running this hot. Is something more serious up, like the headgasket? :-?

 

Sounds about right for a GRS setup... it helps if you cut the middle section of the bumper out. Seal all around the intercooler and radiator so the air that your fans are blowing actually make it through the water radiator.

 

could be? are you lossing water? do you have water? wots you oil like? air lock? did you move the rad?

 

looks like u got the wrongs fans and there pulling instead of pushing

 

The rad is set back abot 3 inches away from the cooler, would it be worth bringing it forward towards the GRS more?
The fans have an arrow pointing towards the rad saying "AIR FLOW" I did origionally wire them up wrong and they were pushing air out but now I've swapped the wires around and they are pushing air through the cooler towards the rad. I'll check for an air leek, but its just had a new water pump and coolant.

 

are you making them blow clockwise?as tht aint the right way for them fans,there wrong mate,blades should curve to the right to go clockwise,

 

muz, ideally you want the two radiators to be sandwiched with the gap all around sealed so they're effectively one physical unit. That'll be the most efficient setup you can achieve.

 

Yeha they move clockwise. Can you take the fans out and turn them round?

 

What I mean by that is take the fan out of the casing and turn it round or do I need different fans?

 

no as there designed to go one way,im not 100% sure bud,but ive had the same problem in the past,and by the looks of wht u have i would say ur the same,but they do need to be closer to get some air to the rad

 

im not 100% sure bud,but im sure them fans should go anticlock wise with the shape of the blades,but might be different

 

Cheers for that. Just seems weird as the arrow points for airflow through them but they push air back with the blade design.

 

thts why im not sure mate,lol,by looking at them they look like they shold go anti clockwise and suck air off,but the symbols say otherwise,and i dout there wrong!lol

they have rotation arrows as well as air flow direction i have mine fixed to the rad and drilled a few holes in the thermostat still runs hot in traffic but wont over heat max i have seen is 110

 

its the gap that's your problem, your intercooler is mounted to far forward, you can see that because you have cut the bumper for the fan location, I never had to do this

I have a GRS and it touches my radiator, the fans blows air through that as well, you can see my radiator behind it if you look

Ive got a solid bonnet (no vents) no mouth cut open in the bumper and, never ever get temp problems

 

looked on there site on there right so ignor me,lol,get them closer together,cant see how u got such a gap!mine sat close as

 

i gave my bumper a small trim seems to work

 

wow ian r thats some trim never seen your car round Clevedon either, im up that way a bit (portishead)

do you also use fans with that ?

 

i gotta agree with carl there, i to can't see how u got such a gap. If i moved my rad back any further it would be hitting onto the turbo. Together, my rad, cooler, fans and then bumper is quite a tight fit.

 

You should be able to feel which direction the air is blowing. LOL.

Surely if you can feel air being blown through the rad, its wired correctly??!! Sorry to make it sound so simple.

 

Yeah it is wired correctly, air is being blown at the rad, just I think the gap is too large and the cool air just isnt reaching the rad enough.

I do have another single slim line fan that I might pop on the front of the rad and see if that sorts it out. I have enough room for a fan.

 

y dont u try mounting the fans the otherside of the intercooler if u have that much room.i did this on my old series 2 cos of the same problem.so the fans blew directly onto the radiator.

 

I like the look of the fans on the front but it may come to that.

 

worth a try mate. 2 be honest most escorts i see with front mounts have the fans on the back anyway

 

get the fans in between that huge gap! must be something you can do to make them fit!

I fitted a GRS to an S2 with std rad and one kenlowe and in traffic on a really hot day it was fine!

 

i just had a standard fan in mine and brought intercooler 4ward in 2 the bumper

 

i recently put one on mine, fans on the radiator and moved the intercooler slightly forward also flushed the coolant system
temperatures never been above halfway

 

cars been of the road since 2005 done a ofac conversion which was a waste of time now on gotech just need to stay out the pub long enough to finish it the fans are between the rad and intercooler

 

what about fan switch and thermostat could it be down to that?

 

what temperatures are you actually seeing and how are you measuring them ?

what act temperatures do you get ?

 

Like it's been said, you need to move the intercooler back so it touches the radiator so the gap between is as small as possible. Seal them up if you can. Fans on the front of the cooler will be more effective at cooling the water than inbetween but will increase your ACT's a bit.

 

Sorted the problem. I had a spare sim line fan (pinched it off my bros Impreza ) so I've mounted it on the back to pull air through the rad, wired to a push button switch direct to the battery, so its not sapping any power from the kenlowes which are wired to the origional fan switch. As soon as the temp starts to reach the N on Norm, at a stand still in traffic, I just switch it on and within 30 seconds the temp starts to fall back towards the Middle of the gauge and If I leave it on it falls right back towards the black box at the bottom.






Not sure how long it will last though being this close to the turbo (about 20mm)

 

You show definately heat wrap the turbo elbow and downpipe anyway. Everything post turbine and past the sump.

be careful with that setup mate, plastic, electrical wires and heat are the ingredients for a nice warm fire.lol
I would recommend moving them from the front of the grs and put them onto the front of the rad, you acts will be up in traffic but ones moving they will be lower that with the fans, and water temp will stay as they sdhould. This is the best setup as all the jap stuff use it, skylines evo's etc. You never see them with fans on the front cos once you reach a cerain speed they arnt efficiant and actually start to restrict the amount of air flow

 

hi have the same problem, when im in town the temp goes straight up the fan is chucking air out is that right? when i get on a park way the temp falls down to normal. help will be great

 

if thay are that close the red hot rad then heats the intercooler? heat soke will soon take over? or am i sounding like a twit?
