Default Solid lifters when, where and how

I see a lot of adverts for hydraulic lifters but few for solid lifters.
When do you need / have to have solid lifters. I am looking at BD16+ inlet and BD14 exhaust cams, I have the double valve springs, looking for the cams still ...
Do I -
- not require
- nice to have
- have to use solid lifters
Currently I think they are nice to have if I can find some at a reasonable price... But I hardly ever hear of people buying / selling them...

If I should get them, what do you recommend, Ive found some new ones, others say they have modified hydralic ones... I guess it depends on the size of your wallet

Any advice based on your experience guys ?

1.8 DIESEL followers are a direct fit, and are shim adjustable, very common shim as well, around Ł3 each but swappsies can be done, the escort/fiesta non turbo diesel ones and the later turbo version of that engine have the followers.

No, you don't need solid lifters for those cams.. you will need a suitable valve spring arrangement though.

What are you using the car for?

If its for trackdays, then IMHO they are somewhere between "nice to have" and "you need them" as by the end of the session your engine will be rattling like a 2 bob watch on hydraluics and losing you a fair bit of lift/duration as a result (and hence power)

Do some trackdays in it, see how quickly the lifters wear out and start rattling like fuck at the end of a session!

does this create actual engine damage or does it just sound like it has?

It knackers the lifters themselves, and can lead to premature cam wear (not really enough cam wear to be an issue) but other than that does no damage, just means you go a bit slower at the end of the session! In fact I guess you could argue it helps preserve the engine as you'll be running less ignition advance and richer than you want by the end of the session too, lol

Thanks for the awesome response... you guys know your stuff...
I will try to answer all the questions in one post

I will be using the car for occasional road use and track days...
I am likely to not rev too high ... say 5-7K, and I know track days just tempt you to hold it flat...
Sounds like I can use the car with standard set up if I don't get that lead foot... I have double valve springs, still looking for reasonably priced cams ... Is that the right setup for the cams.

I can deal with the rattle knowing its for the right reason, had solids in an old push rod six cylinder years ago...

Those 1.8 diesel ones sound good as the aftermarket ones were ten times that cost..., can you direct me to where to get those ones... Is their an exact spec on the lifters / shims that I can use to be sure I get the right lifters and shims please...

Thanks again

there's very little reason not to have solid lifters if you are going on track. you can use a cometic cam cover gasket that is reusable so adjusting them is not much of an issue unless you do mega miles.

We ran into trouble getting the part numbers for the diesel lifters... Per this thread they are more cost effective and work fine so I am told.
My friend could not see them in the part book (thanks for checking).
Does anyone know the part numbers and where to get them please?

Thanks
Gavan
