You can if you have a mappable ecu.

Modified turbo cars don't like to be held flat out for long periods of time, so an EGT gauge will give you can indication of when to call it day and come off the throttle, thus preventing a molten mess of the engine .

If you drive like a girl though, then not really needed.

On a Cossie, I would not want it to go above 900°C on a flat out run.

it's to tell you what the egt is
you have a water temp guage and oil pressure guage but you can do fuck all about what they say too lol

Change the thermostat, fit a bigger rad/header tank, change the oil pump, rebuild a worn engine.

yh but they have more of a reason.. if your water is getting to high you wonder why.. same as if your pressures droping.

i know its the same principle with the EGT but how can this be changed?? i know not driving flat out would help

high egt throttle off immediately much cheaper than a rebuild

Jay B had one on his Escos and IIRC I think it might have saved his engine once at Combe - can't remember what pipe exactly came off but a rising reading on the EGT gauge is what alerted him and made him abort that particular session

Depends, I have seen as high as 1150°C with the ALS on .

Because of the sustained use of the throttle on track, the EGTs can creap a little higher due to heat build up.

What have you seen?

The BEST advantage is gained from a decent ecu, this will SAVE your engine as it can be set to AUTOMATICALLY back off the power if EGT goes too high.
Also useful as a tuning tool, as a given state of tune/parts will give a certain "correct" temp, if it goes off this but not dangerously so you know you have a problem like a dicky lambda etc, or whatever it is, as temp will stay fairly stable under normal use.
Only £115 NEW(audi), but how many ecu's can use them ?, fortunately my one does.

Fine for a road car, but the temps would creep up higher on track to beyond the normal trigger point and would back off power when the fuelling was spot on, but it was only the heat build up from continuous flat out driving that was causing the high temps. Also, it would depend on how the power was backed off, as it would have to back the boost off, as retarding the ignition would just exasperate the EGT issues....

I see about 800 deg on a flat out run in the down pipe and regularly see 900 in the ex manifold primaries

The whole point of the egt is you CAN find the safe max load power wise, bit irrelevant as shonky w/m don't do it anyway.

I'm on T6 though, which can even monitor turbine wheel speed amongst it's many abilities, but I still wouldn't run the EGT control other than to turn the ALS off .
