Default Escort GTi Fault.......Please Help!!

The GTi is still playing up, it's been into Fords more than it's been on the drive recently and they can't fint a fault!!!

The car starts fine, runs fine, but when driving it reaches about 3000rpm and starts to cough and splutter, this clears if you put your foot down a bit, but as soon as you reach 3000rmp in 3rd 4th and 5th it splutters and feels as if it wants to die, the exhaust also gets black very quickly when it's doing it like unburnt fuel??

Any ideas would be great

Cheers

Jobbo.

sounds like air flow meter problems, if its a 1600 and the air flow meter part number starts 96FB or 96** then i would say that first or the throttle position switch?
if its an1800 then they are 93bb/fb items and are just simply mondeo mk1 (any, inc td) air flows.
way to tell on the 1600`s is if inlet is black plastic(air flow is same size at both ends) or ally (big air filter side, small engine side)

many years as a ford specialist, hope i can help.

Sean.

if thats no good save time and money and simply take car to non-ford diagnostic place if any is local, also wiring to air flow can break down also......

I think my brother disconnected the air flow meter on his GTi and it works fine. Maybe runs a bit rich though I think.

Right............ Ford's have plugged it into their machine and no fault codes have come up again, so this morning I took it for a spin round the road and it was hesitating, then I disconnected the multi-plug that attaches to the air flow sensor and took it out again, NO hesitating, I then brought it back attached the multiplug again, took it out and NO hesitating?? I thought I'd leave it a few hours and try again. So this afternoon out I go again with the plug attached hesitated almost immediately brought it back, disconnected the multi plug with the engine still running, went straight back out and again NO hesitation.

Airflow Sensor??

Cheers

The airflow sensors get dirty, expecially if you have a crappy induction kit. Just clean the inside out with carb cleaner.

I would be going back to the Ford dealer and asking why their "skilled" mechanics could not diagnose this fault and ask for a refund on what they have charged you as they have obviously done f^ck all whilst they have had you car.

and what ever you do don't get them to fix it either 'cause they will cahrge you the earth and get the apprentice tea boy to change it for you..

It has a standard air box but will give it a clean and see what happens as a new sensor from Fords is Ł92 + VAT!!
