Default 2wd Escort Cosworths, How Many On The Road??

Just a quick question, how many Escorts have been converted to 2wd over the years??

ABC motorsport (I think) have just had one featured, and I have just finished converting mine - See the thread in Restorations and Projects.

https://passionford.com/forum/restorations-rebuilds-and-projects/247855-my-converted-2wd-escort-cosworth.html

I've seen a few viodeos and pictures so I know there are at least 4 on th road......

hey mate
do you really think it is better then?i mean...not alot of people take the age and abuse in consideration when they judge the "quality" of the 4*4 system, i mean..if you overhaul the 4*4 box...new synros...new bearings and adjust the drives...that will make it pretty good and take some good abuse...but i mean everything breaks if you abuse it enough.
just an opinion.

I'm building a 2wd escos, mainly down to the fact that a 450bhp capable transmission costs in region of 7-10k...I just cant justify it. And 2wd is SOOO much fun

yes but how much power/torque can it take before it breaks something?

iv just brought a brand new straightcut quaife box for my 2wd saph and a new quaife atb diff for less than its going to cost for a good 4x4 gearbox i know my transmission will be good for 450-500bhp day in day out.

Agreed about the cost of keeping the car 4x4, money that I/many people have.

It would be nice to keep it 4x4, but 2wd is just so much more fun now I'm getting the hang of it.

Also I think that they handle just aswell as when the car was 4x4

out of interest how have all people tackled their front suspension, rack etc....

I've gone for 2wd saph rack, subframe & adjustable everything else to get it set up pukka.

I was advised against majbe not using the 4x4 stuff with stub axles to hold the front hubs together as it might not perform as well without drive...

I am building mine from bits so it doesnt really bother me what I use tbh...just wondered how many people have used the shortcut way of using 4x4 bits.

Your thoughts.....

Mine is currently rolling with no engine, coincidentally I was having trouble finding the right steering coupling as I used a sapphy rack which has taller stalk out of rack....I have just made one out of a 4x4 and a 2wd one...be interesting to know if anyone found a ford coupling to use as I couldnt.

I have I have basically a 2wd sapphy under mine, bar the prop which I have sourced from wenny. I went for compression struts and adjustable tcas as I was worried about it not steering right being a bit of a muddle of parts....

I'm building it as a road legal track car with all the right bits and a fresh engine from reyland on the way. It started life as 909 shell to which the previous owner took a grinder to the cage and then fitted an interior so i'm in the process of re-fitting the cage and sorting out all the right bits for the car. I aim to be on the road by this time next yr.

Only pics I have on the pc at minute.

Cheers
Dan

the quaife 2wd boxes gets killed also..just in the same way as a 4*4 quaife box.it is all about how you use it.i mean if you are going to abuse it..someday everything will eventually break.

as said above I've got one but hasn't been on the road for a while various reasons

But the reason I converted it within 2 hrs of getting the car home was it was slow

Had 2 saffs in the house hold mine 2wd his 4x4 and I always had much more fun than him because he was scared of breaking it.

We raced occasionaly and he only ever beat me off the line and I'd real him very quick.

not saying they're not good etc but they are just not for me

i know.. but whcih do you think would break quicker?? i know a 2wd can handle alot more abuse than a 4wd. if you havnt got 20k lying around for a decet transimssion then theres no point building a biggg bhp escort IMO.. you will be to afraid to fuck the box, diff, or somethings.

My escossie is rwd too. The donor was a Sapphire 2wd, and the Escort body was a rallycross champion car in 2003. Now a driftcar

Nice!

Out of interest which steering coupling did you use? I ended up making one but would ideally like a ford one if there's one that fits.

Cheers

It is a DOHC steering rack, but the steering rod to hub connect is modified.
You can find some pics about this:
http://cosworth.hu/?menu=hazik&page_...oiloveresegyeb

Now the angle is more than 44 degree, but 16 inch rim not fit

I converted my escos to 2wd quite a few years ago, still never liked as much as a 2wd sierra, so sold it and got another 2wd sierra.

Small clip of it>
