i'm having my sump and cam cover powder coated.
I have told them to mask the edges up as i dont want any powder coat
inside.

they have assured me that the powder will not flake off under the temp and agitation of the oil so no need to mask

is this true, i'm not sure??

opinions please.

Depends on how clean the surface is, ive seen a rocker cover done on the inside too and it all came off and trashed the lads engine and turbo.

 

surfaces brand new clean. also worried about the seals if edges are coated.

 

I wouldn't risk it!

My Father in law does all my powdercoating and ALWAYS masks off.

 

As above, I wouldnt risk it, I think they are cowboys.

They should only powdercoat open-air facing sides/edges If that makes sense.

dont know where abouts you are but the is a company local to me (near norwich) called aerocoat who did all my bits, spot on finish and will mask what you ask, think rainbird uses them aswell??

Im not familiar with the rocker cover or sump in question but make sure these are either sealed when being blasted or you can get to all nooks and crannies after to clean out any shot/debris...

I trashed one bottom end due to having my sump powdercoated and the windage tray hid some small bits which the oil pump took a liking too and the shells.

On to the powder coating itself you will find that the powdercoating if applied to thick will not only heat up(expand/contract) then loosen bolts that attach the item , unless you sand back to bare materials.....

Secondly if oil comes into contact with the coating mixed with heat it will detriorate and break down.


Whatever parts are painted make sure all assocated nuts bolts etc have thread lock on them or nyloc nuts.

But dont get the underside or the inside painted......

 

totally agree, only powdercoat what you want powdercoated, if they wont mask it for you then they aint doing things properly,

I powder coated for Barley Chalu, and UK Fire and Colour cote for years.
You just face towards you the part to be coated, then just wipe off any over spill.
I did all mannner of things(on the side), mostly m/bike frames, but car parts a lot as well, I always washed in chemical baths first all the bits to be done.
As said any surface with ANY residue of ANY type on it will stop it adhering correctly, and it will fall/flake off

i wouldnt have a sump done, easy enough just to paint it and be much safer

cam covers, good thing about cossies is they dont have any plates covering hiding things, like rs turbos do so they can be blasted

just make sure you give it a good clean after inside and out to get any crap out of it
