Default help with sealing a rocker cover - 2wd cossie

evening all;

i'm having real trouble with my rocker cover leaking

basically the rocker cover is leaking and filling up the spark plug wells with oil (right to the brim), although it only seems to fill the back well nearest the bulk head and a little oil in the 3rd well

before i put the rocker cover on i put a straight edge against it and its straight so i know thats not an issue.

i torqued them up to 15nm but this didnt seem tight enough and oil was pissing in so i've done them alot tighter and it still pisses in. Where i have done them tight; the cam cap studs have stared to indent through the rocker cover so i guess this is too tight but i still have the same problem!

are there different deck heights to cam covers? maybe that;s my problem? anyone know what a standard one should be?

my other options i was thinking was to screw the cam cap studs further in or maybe grind the top of them off?

anybody else experienced this?

ps. i'm using a brand new cometic gasket, please help, getting very frustrated!

Matt

Theres your problem then, the cam cap studs are stopping the cover going down tight.

Have you replaced the cam cap studs????????

Funny they are that high if you haven't changed them.

they shouldnt touch the rc, nomatter how tight, so either they are incorrect studs, or are incorrectly fitted.....

yeah i know that's my problem, if i do them any tighter the cam studs will come through the rocker cover!

as above, i suppose someone could have put them in upside down, or maybe not screwed them in far enought

As said it is obviously bottoming out before being fully tightened and compressing the gasket.
I imagine in the past someone had a leak so they tightened the RC down so tight they distorted it, and it then had a skim, where someone was a bit enthusiastic about how much he took off.
If it were the studs being wrong and too long, you could simply cut them bit I think this is very unlikely to the the case.
I have a RC in my garage so can easily measure it if you want, just PM me.
Whilst the RC is off I would stick a bit of sealant under under the front cam caps as they leak here often.
I only torque mine down to the correct setting and it is fine with a cometic gasket, plus a dab of sealant under the front caps, and a little just to hold the half moons in place, plus around the rear half moons.

Matt, those studs should be NOT touching the cam cover i would suggest taking it off and taking a picthis has happened with 2 covers so there must be another issue

I would gues the studs on the rear caps have been fitted wrong as a guess

mine isnt mot'd or taxed yet, and its still parked up. it looks different now with cossie rims and a 4x4 bonnet - i'm just setting the idle CO correctly and i need to turn the boost up as i reckon it was only running around 15psi

paul's motor is sweet, its not his daily driver anymore.....hence why you probably havent seen it yet

mine will be on the road hopefully in the next few weeks...........all being well
