Engine rebuild
Hello chaps,
My Escort will be coming home soon after being at my mates for a paintwork freshen up and I was thinking that now that it has 76k on it and already suffered a snapped cam belt (16 valves replaced etc and minor valve marks in pistons) that I would really like to give the engine a rebuilt (well not me but someone who actually knows what they are doing) , can anyone recommend someone who can actually do this and for the engine to be able to handle 350-380bhp without me worrying about it going bang. Even better if someone has a rough cost also.....cheers

I would not hesitate in using engine advantages(witham), used them myself, and was very impressed.
saying that though it is one of the easiest DIY engines to do, the engine will handle the power no problem, it is the box you need to look after on 4wd.

numerous engine builders on here, harvey gibbs, msd etc but if your handy with a spanner they are very simple engines
standard internals will cope easy with 380bhp, but i wouldnt let that sort of power run through a standard box, they really need upgrading after 350bhp

Cheers for the reply lads.... Will ring around to get a few prices.. like i say dont want to go to mad as the car is standard at the mo anyway so anything will be a vast improvement.
Would like MSD to do the work due to their excellent rep but would mean stripping engine out and getting it up to them

although that would be a sensible thing to do I am planning to make use of the time the engine is not in to do a bit of underbody and engine bay painting.
from what i no harvey will strip, blast + plate and rebuilt your engine for you and sort a chip for you im not familiar with mad's,msd's work but they might do the same ??? hope this help you
only my own opinion but - even tho its a tuner on your door step.
i would seriously avoid Engine Advantages!!
not going to get in a tit for tat reasoning convo with other users over it, but do a search mate and you may get a vague idea why.

Im ok with a spanner but I have never taken an a block apart and started messing around with..to be honest if I did it I would be worrying that it would break down on me.

Kelvs not the only person on here that that particular opinion though..
I'm well aware that bad news travels twice as far, and for tiwce as long as good news, but after hearing some of the stories about various tuners on here, i would stick with one of the big 4 (given that MSD don't do YB builds anymore...) - Reyland, SCS, NMS or MAD...
If it were my money, i'd (and probably will in the next year or so) go with reyland...

What you want is so simple, that ANY reputable engine builder should have no trouble at all to do that.
I would comrpession test and leakdown test your engine though, and decide if it actually needs a rebuild or not, 380bhp to a standard YB is nothing really, they will do that even with a few miles on them and still be reliable.

book in early and go with MAD never go back.. Agreed mark can be slow sometimes but that is simply down to his popularity and busy business... i agree alot of the above are good i have not bad word to say about them, BUT mark can always seem to get his engine's to get the power desired which is why i went with him... well worth the wait...

I spoke to Tim at SCS today (cheers Beanhead) and he has said a ball park figure of about 3-3.5k depending on whether my Turbo needs sorting etc.The compression will be lowered etc (cant remember the reason for that) and the car to be run on light blues, and every nut and bolt replaced with the cam cover / block repainted.. all in all i thought that was a good price.
Basically I havent had any problems with the block side of the engine but I had the cam belt slip on me about 5 years ago which bent all 16 valves and left valve score marks in 2 pistons. I had the head rebuilt by some mechanic chap my bro knows who replaced the valves with all new ford valves, lifters and alledgedly guides. Me and my brother put the car back together in order for me to drive it to the bodyshop where I have had a full repaint minus engine bay. The thing is I now have the bug again for the car and I want to restore the car underneath and I thought the last thing I want to do is do all that and for some reason it goes bang. I just feel if I get it fully rebuilt (why the missus is giving me the go ahead) then I should have some time happy motoring...and that way I can get engine bay repainted
The thing is there has always been something wrong with the car ie knocking or vibrating so I thought right lets getting it running and built right once and for all
Ill even have to check the transmission parts as when I got it recovered when it broke down the numpty recovery bloke recovered it as a front lift strapping the front wheels up. He then proceeded to drive at 30mph for about 300yards down the hard should before I could stop him...I dont know if that will damage diffs or gearbox etc.
