Bottom end gasket troubble...
Hi,
Im about to change my sump gasket for the fourth time. Last weekend I tok out my RST for a test drive with a brand new sumpgasket. And even though I didnt push the enging over 3000rpm the gasket cracked in the front after about 7km. This time I hade removed the original rocker cover breather and just left the conection open so that the engine could breath verry well.
Could it be something wrong with the sump or is the the engine building up i preasure in the bottomend while Im driving?
Has any one had the same problem or got any ideas on how I could solve this??
Cheers

i have only had this happen if you put the gasket in using silicone sealant, not quite shorer why this happens but it does seem to, it splits between the holes in the gasket, i replaced it with another on using no sealant and had no problem..
hope this helps

be careful not to overtighten , you should just start to see the gasket expand and then stop tightening. if you can see more than a little gasket viewd from the bottom , them it cracks at the holes on the gasket.
best solution is to source a efi sump from ford(with extra support for the extra holes on the rubber one piece gasket) with the one piece rubber efi gasket - do not use silicone , it does not work - oil resistant does not mean oil proof. keep in place with a little grease and longish grub screws , and the two bolts on the gearbox side need a small ratchet with a knuckle joint to tighten and a couple of small extensions - enjoy getting a sore neck!!
drive the car and when warm , nip if required. use of bigger washers also helps , and knock the sump holes outward with a punch ensuring the sump mating surface is flat before fitting
